G R Stein Manuel Brickworks Whitecross Nr Linlithgow

Anyone remeber this firebrick/fireclay manufacturer . In their day they moved vast quantities of their products all over counry , employing many wellknown hauliers .

Yes I remember them very well I used to load at most of the Fire Brick Yards , Bobby Martin had the work, but you musnt ring him before 9 in the morning otherwise he went off it, I dont know why, I never met the bloke but he allways loaded me back for Dorman Longs at Teeside or Consett Ironworks, it was good traffic in those days, on pallets, it made the job easy, but the MT Pallets had to be returned of course, Regards Larry

This is a load of “fire brick” from Manuel on a Savage Transport ( Deryck Hill) Penrith motor. It had failed it’s MOT at Milnthorpe station en-route to S. Wales. We did whatever was necessary and it went back for re-test then carried on to Wales,Dai Bach !!!

Did this " Bobby Martin " operate as a clearance house on a selfemployed basis or was he employed by Stein’s ? .

They had a place at Ambergate, Derbys, on the A610, Lockwoods are (or were?) based there nowadays. They had a large fleet of mostly Leyland Group vehicles (Scammell, Albion, Leyland etc) there are some pics in one of Bob Tuck’s Classic Hauliers books.

He had his own clearance house, cant remember where or his phone number.

There wa also Brick Yards at Castlecarry, Manuel, & Glenboig, one of them had a steep ramp ?, Hunters of Airdrie also had a lot of the work, Regards Larry.

Also Bonnybridge as well, Regards Larry.

I drove this out of Manuel Works early seventies, with either a tipper or flat trailer.

Dave.

Which was the one with the steep steel ramp, defo. a crawler gear job, I remember a driver moaning because his 8 wheeler wouldnt cope with it in 2nd Gear, I wondered how he got a job driving, Regards Larry.

Further to my earlier post, the tippers we used were dropside, does anyone still use these?, bricks out sand back from Chelford or Chrome from, name escapes me Thos. Bolton Ltd. on A53 east of Stoke.
To add some more to this post, after The Guy I was given a Scammell Trunker, this was a beast of a machine, 680 Leyland, fuller box, flamethrower out silencer pipe, boy could that machine go.

Dave.

Larry, I can only remember one really bad loading place, near Huddersfield, name forgotten, massive climb out loaded, maybe someone on here will know.

Dave.

used to load at steins when working for curly cargill, there used to be a steep ramp at linlithgow, think it was called basic bank ,used to pull by at the top and reverse down the hill then down again in to a loading bay not alot of room to spare.

Do you mean Bolton’s at Froghall Dave, on the A52 not the 53?

Pete.

North Lincs Transport used to have Hoyners the sloppie ones the had to put timbers under the trailorwheels to level it up for the forklift, They used to load for Ap/Frods at Scunthorpe, James Transport Bedlington still has some drop siders in use. Regards Larry.

G R Stein/Genefax was a Sheffield based company and they had a place at Oughtibridge near Sheffield and another at Bawtry as well as the others mentioned.I seem to recall one opposite the Glen Hotel at Chapelhall near Airdrie too. I think they disappeared into the Hepworth Minerals Group.

I think you are talking about either one of two places, Meltham, which was on top of the hill lookin down on David Brown Tractors, or Hipperholme which was just outside Halifax. It was a drop downhill into Hipperholme then along a narrow cobblestone track next to the river into their yard.
