Fussy AdBlue pumps

Stupid question but why do some AdBlue pumps “click off” very easily, whereas others pump at full pressure with the handle fully depressed?

Definitely the most annoying thing ever. Basically the pump is buggered. I once worked at a place that had their own pump, not the hand operated one but an eletric pump just like the petrol stations. Every now and again we had to complain about this issue, or endure 15 min + to fill up with ad blue. Not much of a problem during summer. But at night, in the rain, during February, it was not so enjoyable lets say. It seems to me that the problem was on the nozzle, as every time it got fixed, the whole nozzle had to be replaced.

It may be b/s, but I was told it crystallises in the gun part, and if you drop it or bang it on the ground it breaks up, and clears it.
Might be coincidence, but it has worked in the past with me.
Maybe the guy who told me this was hiding round the corner laughing at me as I was dropping it repeatedly

There’s also magnetic contacts in the tank which can get crusted over. Banging the nozzle into the hole :open_mouth: tends to create a better contact and allows the pump to go for longer

Difficult to see that making any difference to the time the pump runs for (or even the rate at which it pumps fluid) as the magnet operates a ‘go/no go’ mechanical device in the nozzle (there are no contacts etc in the vehicle tank - just a dumb magnet) . If there’s a magnet present, the nozzle can be opened and the liquid flows - no magnet (or insufficient strength) and the nozzle remains closed.

It is possible to put adblue in from a commercial pump even if the magnet fitting is missing, the handle starts delivering and then clicks off almost immediately, but you’ve put a cupfuls in each time, i’ve had to do this once.

Other than try turning or altering the angle of the handle, sometimes the handle sideways helps it flow better.

Because if its not making contact properly that can cause the go/no go effect so you get a thumbful out before it clicks off.

Contact was probably not the right word but one has to be present somewhere for the pump to activate. Proximity? Maybe that’s a better word…
