looking at 55 plate fh12 500 xl midlift what fuel return should i expect 600,000 km and and probs i should look out for cheers
how long is a piece of string ? If you are pulling a 32 ft 4m tandem box trailer with light goods you may get 10 mpg plus, on the other hand if you run 16ft tall curtainsider at full 44 tonnes all the time you will be lucky to average 8 mpg, knock that down to 6.5 mpg if it’s windy, you get the idea.
I would carefully check the history on a ten year old truck that has only 600,000 km on the clock, that’s an average of only 40,000 miles a year.

DO NOT BUY A TURBO COMPOUND 500!!!
whats the problem with them was aware of turbo compound probs with scanias but not the volvo, spoken to original owner of the truck and he confirmed what the seller has told me,yeh i know if it sounds to good to be true etc this would be first truck so dont want to get fingers burned first time out ,what do you think of man top used at £165 per week maintained now there rep is shot to bits again that deal sounds to good to be true
With a Volvo FH12 at 600,000km, if it hasn’t had a new clutch fitted recently then I’d be expecting it to fail fairly soon, at my last employed job we had half a dozen of them and every single one had the clutch fail between 550,000 and 650,000km. Ditto the alternator.
My 60 plate just replaced clutch @645000
yeh heard this about volvo clutch at those km thought autos were supposed to save on driver wear and tear never had to replace clutch on any manuals ive driven with far more miles whats with the clutch on the volvo auto

Probably driver abuse, not flicking into neutral when stopped, holding it on inclines on the throttle, not coming to a complete standstill before selecting reverse. My FH had 980 000k on clock when I sold it and was still on its original clutch and it went another 100 000 before the guy who bought had to replace it. Turbo went at 900 000 and only other thing I replaced was a water pump,an A frame bush and a couple of relays.I owned mine from new and serviced it every 35-40 000k (Volvo service interval was 70 000k)

With a manual gearbox the clutch plate normally wears out at about this mileage, with an auto box the thrust race bearing normally fails at around the same mileage and although the clutch plate may still have some meat on it, it would be a totally false economy to remove the gearbox, and not replace the clutch plate and pressure plate at the same time.
As GOG47 says, the life of the clutch assembly can be extended by selecting neutral whenever stopped, as you would with a manual gearbox (I-Shift gearboxes are manual gearboxes, just computer controlled and you wouldn’t sit at a set of traffic lights for two minutes with the truck in second gear and the clutch pedal down with a manual gearbox).
