I’ve been dithering about training and passing my LGV c+e since about 2014.
I’ve recently quit my factory job only to take another one.
I’m considering training at JLD Abingdon and hoping to gain LGV c+e, as there is now a direct route skipping cat 2, which may be an industry bone of contention?
Now seems to be a good time to get involved in the industry but I’m worried about spending so much money and the prospects for a recent pass and a new driver.
Any advice welcome, especially from recent passes and those who’ve trained with JLD in Banbury or Abingdon.
I’m thinking that this category on my licence would give me access to steady reasonably well paid work for the remainder of my working life.
Newbies are getting jobs very quickly now and many, perhaps most, of those are full time permanent ones due to the current shortage
The only slight downside might be that by the time you pass it will be post Xmas and the slackest time of year
JLD have had great reports in the past and I see no reason why that will have changed
Perhaps not the best time of year to be entering the industry (after Christmas) but it always picks up again around March - and that’s when you’ll have your shiny new licence if you start proceedings now.
I dont personally know JLD. But I strongly suggest you ask the following questions:
Can you conduct the 3a test in house? (If not, it could well mean they haven’t got adequate reversing facility)
Will the 3b test be run from the training site? (If not, you’ll end up at a public centre which may or may not be several miles away. Worth checking)
Take a look at the fleet. Is it tidy? (If not, you could end up struggling with a worn out vehicle)
As I said, I dont know JLD. But I’d be interested to know the results of the research.
I passed my Class 2 a few weeks ago and started a full-time, permanent position 3 weeks later. I’m well aware that that is still quite fast, but I just wanted to make a point that it can be done.
I’m sure the opportunities for Class 1 are even greater.
