Fridged Freight

Just a question Bill.As these pictures are certainly going back a few years,`61 being the last one,how did the trucks get on board the hips?Presuming ro/ro was only adopted later on.Were they craned on?Unit first, then trailer?Do you recall the first ro/ro ferries.and if so,when(roughly).
Great pictures by the way, amazing to see what our predecesors had to endure.

Hi whiplash roll/off were out in the 50s I put a picture on somewhere but don’t ask me where of a wagon coming off late 50s but it was not uncommon to be lifted on and off as well.
cheers Johnnie

Tilbury /Antwerp ?

Not disbelieving you Sammy, amazing to think, they were around as far back as the 50`s.Bet there were no swinging linkspans,or adjustable ramps in those days.Boot down and wait for the bang!

for all those asking about lift on lift off the pictures were taken by chris wyatt son of the founder john wyatt and were taken in 1959 by chris the ferry was from felixstowe to rotterdam - furness shipping

Hi whiplash this was in 1957/8 and I don’t know if this was the first roll on/off but it is the earliest picture which I can find and the boat -train from Harwich used to take wagons as well as the train across as well. I know when I started at Pickfords in 67 they had been going over for a few years and was provided with my first passport by them only 5 years then
cheers Johnnie

They always seem to look happy in these pics doing a job that must have tested your patience to say the least keep em coming though this is the best thread on here by a mile

Well Ramone, you speak as you find i have always thought and to speak on a subject with no first hand knowledge is a bit silly i think, but that doesnt stop lots of people doing it ! i never had a problem with Wyatt’s as far as i was concerned the pay was good, the motors also the servicing and back up from the fitters and the cameraderie second to none. You will alays hear stories about this firm and that but unless the stories are backed up by facts they remain stories (better to watch a documentary about popular hauliers on the TV!).Not long after the firm closed several of us met up at Salvesens in Oulton Broad one day and sat talking about Wyatt’s we all said that if they hadnt have packed up we would all still be there - no on wanted to go antwhere else at the time.
