Northern boy:
Can we get back to the point which is the crash on the m5 instead of having a go at J D for what he said ( which was wong and he probably regrets now ) They are saying that the thick fog came down realy fast and all started from there.R.I.P to them that have lost there lifes and thincking of the others.
It maybe did come down fast, but thats why they set the matrix to FOG SLOW DOWN, but do drivers take any notice? Well you know the answer to that one.

again i,m also with bigvern in the respect that some members seem to be in the secret handshake club and get away with comments where as others get ripped to shreads…
You obviously haven’t read much of this thread if you think he has “got away with it” and not been “ripped to shreads”. Whilst I don’t personally agree with his comments they don’t break any of the site rules and I think the comments made by everyone else on this thread are probably a better penalty for it than anything a mod or admin could dish out.
i got stuck on the M42 today due more drivers who struggle going in a straight line with everyone going the same direction
This is what ■■■■■■ me off about this place, Certain people can get away with ■■■■■■■■ like this. NOT WHAT YOU KNOW EH? ■■■.

Jessicas dad, all I can say is poor Jessica.
This accident could have been caused by absolutely anything, some using a phone, nodding off or the really terrible crime of having a heart attack at the wheel.

With that pathetic post you should be kicked off this forum permantly and never seen again, if anybody actually knows this prat would they please show him the error of his ways!!!

I have a massive amount of sympathy for all concerned, including the emergency services that must be going through hell. Think of all those families that have been changed forever. Any of us could get swept up by a tragic incident like this. Whinging about blame or being held up at such a time is pathetic. Hundreds of lives have been ruined. Think of all the people waking up this morning to hear something none of us ever want to hear. Not to mention members of the emergency services who have probably seen things that will haunt them forever. To me hours sat in traffic is less than nothing compared to a human life.
Eye witness account who as directly behind the iceland lorry: Not word for word but this is the jist of what they said
We where behind the iceland lorry suddenly thick fog came down and it totally disappeared we heard thud, thud, thud, thud, thud we where expecting to be hit from behind and pushed under the lorry but it never came. We thank god we walked away from it all.
I was tinkering with my bike a few years ago, nice sunny afternoon so I had the door up & was fettling it ready for a nice ride out.
I saw out of the corner of my eye, the Police patrol car drive slowly past & into our cul-de-sac & thought nothing of it, not my business, perhaps that young lad down the bottom end has been misbehaving again.
He’d turned around & was slowly parking it across my driveway . . . my driveway.
I stood up from the bike & watched him get slowly out of the car, it seemed to take an eternity. They were all out & all in their own cars or bikes, missus, 2 lads & 1 daughter.
I remember being frozen to the spot & I remember my hand hurt clutching that spanner so hard, he’s walking towards me & I can’t quite make out the expression on his face. I hated him, the heartless [zb], which one is it you effin pondlife.
Turned out to be a bike I’d sold a few weeks earlier, still registered to my address (whoops) & the bloke I’d sold it too was about my age.
He made me a cup of tea, I was still trembling & wet through with sweat but eventually managed to dig out the V5 slip with the new owners (fairly local) address. I can’t quite explain how it felt when the floods of relief turned so quickly to the awfull realisation that someone’s going to get the message for real in the next 15mins.
Nobody sets out on a journey knowing they’ll be in an accident & you can be the bestest, most carefull driver or rider on the road, but it doesn’t stop you being a part in someone elses accident.

From the three you said only heart attack is accident the rest is stupidity. Someone using a phone - that’s illegal and dangerous, nodding off - do not drive tired. Driving too fast and too close is also stupid that is what cause pile ups especially in fog.
R.I.P. to all those who died
MisterStrood:
I do not think that it was one person guilty. Pile ups are caused by tailgating and driving too fast and there was more than one car involved
We may well never know for certain what caused it, as others have said it could have been a mechanical failure, some kind of health issue (like a heart attack) or simply bad driving by one or two people up at the front. As MrV said it is also possible that the person who caused it all didn’t even realise and carried on with their journey unaware of the carnage that happened in the fog behind them.
One thing we can in my opinion be fairly certain of though is that for such a large number of vehicles to be involved a number of them must have been driving too fast and/or too close to the vehicle in front. Over the years many of the accidents of this type that I can remember have happened when it has been foggy so if there is any good at all to come out of this situation then perhaps we will all drive that little bit more slowly and carefully in the fog this winter to reduce the chance of something similar happening again.

Very very true. I was trundling along on my way home from work a few years back doing a steady 50mph in heavy rain on a 60mph limit single carriageway when some tool in an MGF decided I wasn’t going fast enough and decided to overtake me on a bend. He hit a puddle as he was passing me, lost control and the resulting accident wrote off his car and mine. Thankfully neither of us were badly hurt and there was nothing coming the other way but it just goes to show how even if you are doing everything right you can still get caught up in somebody else’s mistakes.
Info doing the rounds on PH is a vehicle failing to give way when joining the motorway.Vehicles already on the road had pretty much nowhere to go.Happened in low visibility too.

That is what I hope for. We all should realize that even if it was accident not carelessness many of those lives could have been saved by only keeping the distance and driving with regard to the weather conditions.
jessicas dad:
i agree my comments were way out of order and im sorry i take them back.
Pleased to hear that, I know the full facts of the accident… NO I’ll call it a crash as it my not have been caused by accident were not known when you posted.
Things do seem a lot worse this morning, Just read "Chas’s comment, it made the hair on my neck stand up.
I don’t know if it is because I am getting older that things affect me as they do now (45) but I am easily affected by accident scenes where you know someone has been serously hurt.
My thoughts really do go out to all involved and affected by this event.
