Free roads

I don’t like paying peages if I can help on principal…

Is there a free way from Calais to Amiens for Sunday when the ban ends

There are a few options but the most direct route (non toll roads) uses D roads mainly,
That is D943 from Calais which starts from the A16 , (out the port throw a right at A26/A16 interchange heading for le shuttle) and take the 1 st junction No 46 ,

Then round the RA under the autoroute, take direction for ST Omer round st omer toward Bethune,
when near to Lillers turn right at RA onto D916 (there are a few 4.3mtr rail bridges around but as far as i can see not on the route )
http://i.imgur.com/RqSEw.pngthere most likely will be signs for the A26/E15 at the next RA , stay on D916 this should take you under the A26 heading for Saint- Pol -sur-Ternolse,

Just before the d916 runs onto D941,and then back to D916 then Doullens http://i.imgur.com/T6CEM.png@Doullens head for the RN25 (D925 ontoRN25) @ RA 1st exit toward Amiens

Alternative partial route is same to Lillers , you stay on the D943 to Bethune instead then D86 >D941 > D937> N25 at Arras and follow to Amiens http://i.imgur.com/5M6ng.png

I aint looked at a map, cos I aint got one handy. Not that it matters a lot.
If you plan to drive in France on Sunday, before the ban is lifted, then the ONLY road open to trucks is the A16, from the Belgian border to the ports or tunnel. Know as The Corridor.
I’m not sure because I’ve never had to go further South than the tunnel, but I think you can drive down to the port of Boulogne. As Amiens is further South than that, you can only get as far as Boulogne.
I’d try to time it to be arriving at Boulogne at about the time the ban lifts, so I could run out my driving time.

Yes, but why you would want to on a sunday night when you’ll be pushing on to get parked up ASAP I’ve no idea

Still, if the Yorkshire gene is guiding you crack on mate :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

I haven’t made myself clear, I want to come of the boat in Calais when the ban is ending… I thinks it’s 2200 then finish off my card parking near as I can to my first delivery on Monday at Amiens.

There is a dfds from Dover to Calais at 19.15 tomorrow that I’m going to aim for. If that docks at 20.45 English time then that’s near enough as add an hour on for the French time that 21.45.

I think I’m right for that then I start on a clean card at Amiens.

Previously you could use the RN1 to Abbeville and go through the town centre, now it is bypassed and has a 7.5t weight limit. You could come off and head through Vron, it is what I do if I am killing time, there is a decent resto in Vron.

Normally though I would use the Wimille viaduct and pay the toll

So which route did you take to Amiens autoroutes (peages) or the nationals?

I went on the autoroutes to be honest as it was 2300 by the time I got there and I didn’t fancy navigating back roads in pitch black.

Yep I told one groupage shed the other week I wasn’t going for a collection as it was up a peage route 37 euros, I was up there the previous day and they should of told me then but forgot, phoned the office and they backed me up and told the groupage shed to use their own lorry to collect it.

JD as an ex owner driver and employed driver,i use to try the free roads, but it cost more in fuel and time, more restaurants on the nationals.
The quality of the tarmac is very good, ever noticed how the truck seems to float along the toll road, and how quiet the ride is?

I agree, this week I’ve done Paris and west France and used a mixture off both depending on the timings off deliveries.

Oh yes,and the round abouts that the French love, need sea sick pillls going around those on a ten hour drive.Depends on the shedule too.

Just to add tommy although I didn’t use your instructions but I’ve printed off your post for future use.

I use them if I HAVE too but if there is a viable alternative I think I should use that. I won’t pay out unnessary charges if I don’t have to.

I haven’t on European long enough to know short cuts and ways that are free, that’s why I ask if I’m not sure.

If you get weekended head off the toll route to a small town or village, you will be surprised on what you can see and do,if you have a bicycle that solves a lot of walking too.I have stumbled on concerts and events going on,and off course better food to be found off the main routes.
