Forward facing cameras

In your short clip, at times it appears that you are driving whilst straddling the center line.
if you had an incident, i imagine it would be important to show that you were in the correct position on the road. is this because your camera is mounted in the middle of the screen, or dash?
i assume you have tried various positions, to obtain the best result, so where would you recommend the best position to locate the camera?

the camera is in the bottom r/h corner

i just got a £25 one off ebay.

ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Camera-Re … 3f16b8246e

I’m not seeing many good reviews for that one. I guess you get what you pay for though, eh?

i`ve just checked…my camera is not the one in the link.

id post the exact link...but i cant find the camera on ebay

commonrail:
no thats 9 mins...which is plenty, seeing as your only interested in the last few seconds before a crash. i do have a 32gb card which stores loads of 3 min clips...but imo its needless.

Personaly, I’d have a bigger card in, because remembering to stop it / mark it / switch it off when you’re busy diving out of the cab to see the damage etc. You could end up losing the actual footage of the crash.

Plus, in certain situations, it’d be a good idea for it to be recording after the event too, like 1 I had where someone claimed I’d smacked them afterwards and because I was quite irate at the time it was believable, but I was cleared due to no marks on me or my hands etc… But would’ve been easier to show the vid.

You can always carry a little spycam as well to (dis)prove any “out of vehicle” incidents. Anyway, commonrail, I too was surprised at the video quality - if it was <£30 then it just seems too goddam cheap! I was put off by the comments on the unreliability of the listed item - I presume it’s the same as the one I’ve seen. Still, yours looks plenty fine enough, especially I like the loop facility. These things are so cheap nowadays, it’s daft not to have one.

Yes, and dont forget your paypal password please.

Yes it is. Unless you tell everyone your ebay password and user name then no body would be able to buy anything using your account. They would then have to know your Paypal password to pay for it.

Be careful company’s start putting these in for insurance purposes then over time start to use them to remove unwanted drivers!! my cousin works for a firm that use smart drive so has a camera on the driver/in cab he can’t even scratch his face incase it sets off the record on it.NO Eating/drinking smoking ect basically both hands on wheel unless changing gear, seatbelt at all times and no gesturing of any kind! You get the idea…

Is this legal?
I will start killing people if this happens.

Just about to put them in all of mine !!!

Someone I know with a fleet of coaches bought some off Ebay for something like £30 each. They attach with a windscreen sucker mount, record con tinually to a memory card and even have a built in swivel full colour screen.

So far she has received one prohibition from VOSA for view to front because of where it was mounted and one ‘word of warning’ from the Police because the driver could see the full colour built in screen from the drivers seat.

The screen is only there for setting up purposes, once it’s set up, the screen folds back in and turns off. It’s a damned site smaller than a sat nav, so I’d be suprised to hear of any prohibitions unless they stuck it in the middle of the screen.

Ideally, they need a power point at the top, so you can have it top dead centre, it’ll get the best view from there, but I think it’d still have to go inside the wipers swipe to see anything, especially this time of year.

I bought one a few weeks ago for £21.00, Chinese made, only problem I have is trying to save the images. I am using a 4gb card that seems to record about twenty 2 minute clips (the option is there of recording 2 5 or 15 minute clips but in reality two minutes is quite enough.

I have to save the images to a folder to view them, viewing from the card automatically deletes them for some reason. Other than that, the recording is fine although ‘flares out’ in sunlight, but I cured that using an old camera filter between the lens and the windscreen, not pretty but it works!

The screen folds up so its not on display, I cant see the reason for having it in view.

I’ve just got one, thanks for the link. fed up with being overtaken and people pulling back in almost taking my front bumper off. honestly, a supermarket truck is like a red rag to a bull with some people.

Video someone speeding or jumping a red light you will probably be told to go and get a life.

But not good enough itself.“”

Black box Auto boy is a free app for Android users.I use this one and I have found it to be fine. I use it with my big Samsung Galaxy S2 and it sits in screen plugged into charger killing 2 birds with 1 stone…and filming it Lol.Try it, because its a phone app it cuts down on the amount of kit I take.

I bought a Smartcam 2 HD from a company based in Thurrock. Mounts to the screen using a sucker. Comes with a nice long power cable so moutning near the top of the screen is fine.

Upto now its been great and the playback is good enough. I got a 32gb SD card with mine and it loop records, retaining around 5hrs of footage before starting to overwrite. I’ve mounted mine so the lense is almost touching the windscreen so I get no reflection.

However, my singing is dreadfull when watching the footage back.

Just been reading about these cameras. Can anyone recommend one that’s easily movable from vehicle to vehicle as I’m freelance and have a different vehicle daily?

I agree. They’re not gonna type-approved or calibrated to prove speeds accurately but then that’s not what they’re for, nor should anyone be interested in trying to do the authority’s job. They could sure be used to provide evidence of serious wrongdoing though (even excess speeding, though I wonder if anyone else would be interested if nothing else happened), especially in the “my word against yours” situation, if they capture the relevant pictures, e.g. number plates, identification of individuals, evidence of being on the phone etc. as well as any incidents of actual poor driving, though these sort of things can be quite difficult to capture as you’d possibly have to be quite close and stationary IMO. The camera, unlike people, never lies, does it?
