I have found myself in an RDC waiting room surrounded by foreigners speaking rubbish and been tempted to ask them to leave or speak in a language I am familar with (thats just English then).
I always resort to primitive gibberish when abroad, don’t want to bond with the locals you see, really don’t care to hear about how they barely missed the herald, failed in winding up the legs on the trailer or are expecting their third baby with their sister
I do think that if you are working or living for an extended period in a Country you should learn and speak the language of that Country.
It’s not only for the benefit of those working round you, but also if you can’t speak or understand the local language you are at a disadvantage.
To put some balance in this argument, I sometimes struggle with regional dialects in this country, but I’m not going to learn to speak Geordie or Scouse to earn a living.
To listen to some British drivers, there are only them that can drive a truck, whereas the reality is those roller shutters were dented, the bollards pushed over, the bridges struck and the loads lost on roundabouts well before the EE element came over here.
I don’t like foreign drivers taking work off us, whether that be as a newly arrived resident, or those that dart around all week then catch the ferry back on Fridays, but with the crud wages that some employers pay and the total disinterest about who they have driving their trucks, what can you expect.
Anyone who goes to any country to work should speak that country language. That part I agree.
Dipper_Dave:
Course if we had shown some real courage of our convictions in 1945 most EU countries would speak English as their first language and their original language would carry as much weights as Welsh does today, but hindsights a wonderful thing.
In fact there would be no EU we would all be called the UK, but thats probably a bit controversial.
The biggest Bsht I have come across. If not joint alliance you probably would write that in german.
A few years ago I was waiting to unload in a place near Dartford with a Dutch driver.
We are speaking In Dutch to each other as it’s our mother tongue, when an English driver decided he’d had enough of listening to us & told us to STFU !!
He was quite shocked when we answered him back in faultless English…

Think everyone agrees on that you Genius

Oh stop it, you’ve been watching too much telly. The joint alliance only showed up when Hitler was overstretched and on his arse.
Hi Folks. Regarding this Topic, I would like to point out, that some seven years or so ago, my Landlord began taking in Eastern European Immigrants, and to this day, admitted, tenants have come and gone, try as I may, I cannot get anything more than a grunt from them when attempting to engage them in conversation, whether they are Male or Female!
This is not by any means, racist rant, just life as it is on the ground in this Country we call Great Britain these days.
I expect to receive a lot of Flak for this post, maybe, well, just maybe deserved!
Regards
Kevin
Haw haw, this is hilarious. Fancy expecting Johnny Foreigner to speak our language when, if you peruse this forum long enough, you find quite a few born here can’t even do it correctly. The standard of spelling, grammar & punctuation on here is a fine testament to our education system. Get your own house in order first.

Not from me Kev, although perhaps it was there first day and they hadn’t quite grasped many English words yet. Nowt wrong with this if they intend to make the effort… If not then send em back to their mud huts or whatever passes for shelters in their part of the globe.

I think it’s your telly. Seems like you are clueless about WW2 as that is the time when Brits join the war ( when Hitler was already on his knees ) What saved Britain from being invaded was La Manche.

Do you think that an English test should become part of the regulations to drive/work in this country?
Obviously this would have an impact regarding UK drivers working abroad, so let’s assume for the sake of this questions we are looking at UK full-time, and ignore being able to do the odd trip oversea’s.
However, if you do think there should be a language test to work in a specific country, at what point (how many days) do you think qualifies as full-time work in a specific country, and thus a language test becomes mandatory?

Maybe it’s a stupid question because you don’t understand the point of it?
My question was intended to provoke people to think about how Steve93 was abused on this forum because he was Romanian. Her spoke good English and seemed sincere and polite regarding his enquiry. Yet because he MAY want to work in the UK and possibly take work away from UK residents, he was treated with hostility and abuse.
So the point of my question, was to try and provoke people to think of the opposite situation. Where a UK drivers does work abroad, and then probably complains when he/she is treated with hostility because they can’t speak the language.
Yes I was being somewhat cryptic with my thought provoking question. But being more direct, and asking if you’re a small minded moron, was probably not going to yield the same input.
My personal opinion is that drivers and workers who choose to live and work in a country should learn the language. If they then find themselves treated with hostility because they don’t learn the language, then they only have one person to blame (Themselves!) And I’m sure many UK residents fall into this category when working in other countries!
Now do you understand the point of the question?
Steve93 did not deserve the abuse he got, he was just trying to the best he could for himself and his family that the law would allow.
Hi all.As someone who has lived and worked in Holland [30yrs] and now lives and works in Swedish Lappland i Think it is a moral duty to try and learn the language of the country in which you live\work if only to show that you are trying to fit in and appreciate the fact that you are able to live and work in that country. Also it will facilitate getting and keeping work if the people see that you are making an effort to be part of,and integrate within the Community. Here it is obligatory to speak basic Swedish within the mines as a safety requirement.Just on a personal note i also think it is only right that you should not only be paid the same as a ‘‘local,’’ but also contribute all of the required ‘‘social costs’’,i.e. tax, pension, health contributions, etc. That way everyone sees that you are a functioning and worthy member of society, and are not just employed because you are ‘‘cheap labour’’ who is paid at a lower rate and expected to subsist on a bowl of rice and roadkill so the employer can pocket all the ''non paid ‘’ premiums.Mike
agreed hutpik but the scenario from one certain poster with a very narrow mindset claims that foreigners should talk in english between themselves while in his presence, he can’t go a day without the local gossip of bratislava/timisoara/plovdiv you see.
I can only imagine what would happen if I’d go to the port of muuga and demand russians to speak estonian while in my presence - tanks would be starting their engines in kaliningrad

You seem to have missed the light hearted part of my post! And actually I did see your point, but equally, from the way it was written, IMO it deserved the reply I gave.
And by being somewhat cryptic, your not necessarily going to get the reply a better worded post would have generated.
As for your question, it’s been answered pretty well by others, as far as our industry goes, no, frankly I don’t think an English test is necessary.
I’m yet to encounter a foreign driver that I couldn’t communicate with to a degree enough for him / her to understand me. Tbh, most I encounter seem better at our language than we are!

Not any bigger than you !
Fighting and dying because their allies ( Britain and France ) decided to make phoney war - Phoney War - Wikipedia. Than they joined Western allies to fight alongside forming 4th largest force in that WWW2 for which help they were sold like pack of crisps. When you will read at least 10 books of history of WW2 written by authors from different countries rather than your own propaganda then we can discuss it.
Until then do not call me an idiot if you not really know me.
I don’t need to know you to know you’re an idiot. You constantly furnish the proof whenever you type.
