That’s the place Chris. I used to do a lot of business with them. I am trying to think of the foreman fitters name.
John S.
They were using this DAF 95 up to a few months ago,I found it resting up at Ramsey harbour a few weeks ago.A bloke told me it was either ex Wincanton or Denby Transport,Lincoln.Couldn’t get any closer that day unfortunately
Does anyone remember the Transcontinental wagon & drags that Ladbrokes used delivering betting slips etc around '79 - '81. I think they had two based at Doncaster, one with the name “The Lion” above the grille, they always seemed to be travelling up and down the A1.

A mate of mine from Maltby was second man on one of them TIPIT,they were based on the Hellaby Ind Estate, next to J1 on the M18.I’ll ask him if he’s any photos.
This was mine
Apologies if it’s been on before.
Thanks for that Chris, that outfit you had looks identical to the Ladbroke outfits IIRC. When I was with Newsflow we had 3 of those swivel axle trailers, they only went out with a trailer on Saturday night runs. Coupled up to Leyland Roadtrains and C - series ERF’s, I only ever volunteered to take one out once, and found it impossible to reverse, I take my hat off to you sir !

They were a handfull for a start but just something you got used to eventually.I never got as good as some of those continental lads though! The trailers were on dollies. We took them all over the place on night deliveries and could get in places easier than taking a 40ft trailer, they weren’t called wagon and pups for nowt, followed you like a dream. We only had them two years and they were replaced with Scania 82Ms like this:-
What a difference in power over Woodhead,Scanias no contest Both photos were taken on Woodhead coming back to Maltby off nights.

I dont know if anyone on here knows the trucks or the owner but there was a house near me in belvedere kent where the chap had two transcon tractors on his drive. One was a six wheel tractor and one a four wheeler and both had been restored but the last few times i have been that way they seem to hae gone. I was just wondering what had happened to them.
Ive never driven or realy been close up to one as they were a bit before my time
but they look like a great truck for there era if you were doing long distance work. you could be forgiven for thinking that renault may have been influnced when they designed the magnum.
I know Steve well, the white 6 wheeler was sold last year, his others have had to be moved elsewhere due to the ridiculous LEZ that was so well thought up ! The yellow one is ex Tintleton.
Not strictly Transcon but Presume these are the outfits Tipit was talking about ■■
I spent 4 hours on my own parking these in a field next to Anderton boat lift for this shot, all the trucks had to be reversed in from the gate in the bottom left of the shot
i was in a yard a month or so ago and the bloke had an old transcon in a shed. it was pretty much rotten although i think he said he had a renault cab for it.it had belonged to a company called fullers maybe and he said it used to run mars bars to italy ?i had the registration scribbled down but lost it.its owned by an irishman who used to run uk to ireland with furniture.

Im sure Fullers were based in or around Slough, can picture thier trucks in my head from a while ago (80`s??).
Mars were based based in Slough to so it sounds about right. Im sure some of our ex M/E members loaded Mars bars, ice cream etc out of there for all points East!!

Can remember Fullers from Slough, red and white motors - didnt their trailers have “continental clipper” written on them ?
Wasnt they taken over by Dodds ?
dieseldog6:
Does anyone have any pics of the Versapak transcon, that used to be driven by Dave Smith out of Dartford i think reg was A***kkk, used to ship out on the Oula Line every Sunday back in 84 for Germany.
I don’t have any pictures but I had it after Versapack sold it, it was A360 KKK, it was green & orange when I had it, it was later painted silver & blue.

A bit away from Transcons but it’s funny how something you read triggers a memory. This was after my m/e days and I was working for Cadwalladers. I remember being told to load at Mars Slough. Having backed on to the loading bank you had to uncouple from the trailer and pull the unit forward. Then a bar would lower across the front of the trailer (safety precaution). I did all that only to be told that they couldn’t load me as I had meat hooks in the fridge box. I phoned Caddies and the transport manager told me to take the hooks out and place them in the cab. You can imagine what my reply was…needless to say, I didn’t load there!!!

Didn’t he have a D reg Daf 3800 super space cab too? Recently doing the shows and being featured in a magazine about 2 years ago on a trip to Europe with a few other period trucks?
He (Paul Binns) did go along with a gang of old timers down to either Carisio or they went up to the Volvo/Scania factories, may have been both, don’t know about the Space Cab but he did a brand new 3300 on a C plate I think, it was in EVS colours & looked the nuts, he didn’t keep it long though. Now I think about it I’m sure that his dad ran a couple of tidy old 95s on Europa work a couple of years back, ain’t seem em around for a while though
Started my driving working for him , when he just had a couple of merc vans subbing for EVS . He got the 3300 when he passed his class 1 , then Chris Barker drove it , then myself . then i realised that more to life than nice lorry & working 80hours a week. His dad Tony passed away few years ago .
Swifts transport ran several Transcons in the late 70s early 80s & Ford replaced the ■■■■■■■ engines in two of them (PNH 2R) & (TJL 562S) with two stroke detroit diesel V8s as test beds. Dont know what became of them , or how trials went .
bumper:
vav hee ran transcon’s to middle east also uk couple of photos,
Van Hee also ran a drawbar to the M/E piloted by a friend,Jimmy Hill from Jedburgh, he has promised to give me a photo he has off it
Brian
HI BEDGAR047
If you talk to jimmy or big kris kristiansen they wish they still made them , think most drivers that had them enjoyed driving them, a nice transcon would like nice on the front of jimmys powder tank
thanks Mark
