Ford Cargo

Hi all, going restoring a Cargo 3828 and would probably be easier to source a replacement cab. So, does anybody know of any sleeper cabs breaking or even a cargo with a decent cab to buy? Any help would be appreciated.

Have you looked on cab masters website ,they’re enough money but have new cabs in stock fully kitted out .(not sure if they’ve a cargo one)

Might be worth a look at this one listed on towtrucktrader.co.uk (on heavy site) an old Ken Williams from Swansea I believe, always has very impressive vehicles on fleet.

Would be nice to see some pictures. I used to be a mechanic and Cargo’s were the mainstay of our fleet. 7.5 tonners right up to artics. They were nice trucks to work on. Never thought I would see the day when they would be considered a classic worth restoration. I must be getting old.

Ha ha! Yeah, same here
My first ever class 1 run was with a Cargo, circa 1986 - and what a disaster that was

Nothing on cabmasters for the cargo. Just a rare find these days in artic form, it will be something different to have for a while. Think I have something sorted, thanks for the replies. Will get a few photos up when the work starts

Pics would be good - where did you find it!!! Very rare as you say and good to see another one being restored. This could bring the serviceable total of 3828’s up to around 12 or 13 when your done (UK wide…)

Finding it hard to locate a replacement cab. Hopefully find something. I know they’re rare but there has to be a point where cost exceeds the value when restored. Hard to put a price on something like a cargo tractor unit. Was planning to restore and keep for a year or so and move it on then to make room for another project

May be worth trying Hastings Transport from Rackheath, near Norwich. Still uses them as working wagons.

As ERF Marc says above, give Roger Hastings a ring. I know he does have at least one spare sleeper cab - though whether he’d sell it is another thing entirely (I doubt it if I’m brutally honest!)!?!

Indeed so and those that have come up for sale in the last 5 years (only three I have seen) all sold fairly quickly and two of those needed restoring.

Good luck in your restoration anyway. Most of the body panels are available second hand or after market (is the cab saveable!■■!). Engine bits are still available from ■■■■■■■ - but ridiculous prices. Anything exclusive to a heavier weight Cargo (ie not found on a 7.5 tonner) and a Ford part is impossible to get now. Steering drop arms and radiator top and bottom hoses being the ultimate example.

Try cargo spares in Trowbridge, that’s were I get all our bits from for our 1313 horsebox…

Cab could be saved but a lot of work. Floor panels in very bad shape. I think they can be bought though. Good thing is that it is more or less complete, starting and driving but not sure how good it runs. Have located a 813 sleeper in good enough shape, bought as chassis and cab but am told it won’t fit. Will try those contacts provided on the thread and see what happens then.

No a sleeper off of an 0813 won’t fit - the engine tunneling and thus floor panels are entirely different to accomodate the ■■■■■■■■ Forget Cargo Spares in Trowbridge or Phillips’s in Nuneaton - they are only good if you’re a horsebox owner. Very few -if any- heavyweight bits

Terratology: your 1313 horsebox is really not that different to an 0813 in terms of cabs. Just the flared wheel arches which are a ‘bolt on’ component and avaialble from Phillips’s or Cargo Spares of Westbury as an aftermarket fibre glass part. These will fit a 1313 or a 3828. Your engine is the same as an 0813 Cargo, but the engine tunnelling in the cab is entirely different to a 3828.

I hope so - but where!■■! Am all ears! I wouldn’t worry though - I’m sure your a ‘dab hand’ with the Mig!!

For me, having saved more than a few MK2 Escorts over the years, I found my 3828’s cab a ‘cakewalk’ comparatively speaking…
