The Rocket Van:
Rocket Van. A68 Scottish Borders.Just started up and I need some driver feedback.
What you like and don’t like about food vans ,how can I improve my service?
Thanks in advance
The Rocket
do you have separate toilet and washing facilities for staff away from the main van
or is it a case of in the bushes when no customers about
I don’t have toilet facilities yet. However it has been raised so many times by different groups that I can see it is a real issue and would add to my services.
I’m Looking into the supply of them now.
Thanks for your involvement and time.
You could also consider a signature dish to become known for, something like a pulled pork bap with apple sauce and stuffing options on a nice large bap, oh make sure its buttered as well- I had a bacon butty the other day from a van and there was no butter on the bread, shocking.
When I’m hungry i don’t care if youve just done a dump in the woods as my immune system needs a good workout now and again, all this wash your hands crap is not helping the human race at all.
That said toilet facilities are OK but those portaloo things can put folks off their food…
As others have said, decent sausages , describe where they’re from, eg “O’ Rileys of Woodhall Spa organic Lincolnshire sausages” People care where their food comes from.
Decent eggs cooked properly, no coppering. A range of cold filled sandwiches and baps is good, not everyone wants a fry up.
Heinz beans and ketchup, not generic catering ones.
Crusty bread/French stick.
Aluminium tables and chairs cleaned regularly, not crap plastic ones.
If you do chips and have the space for a chipper, proper (not frozen) chips done in dripping, very good.
Is it going to be in a lay by? What would be really good would be for the chairs to be away from the road on a separate patch of land next to the van. Maybe out of the rain under a small marquee type affair? No one wants to sit and eat with traffic thundering past. Bit difficult to do but if the van is always in the same place, speak to a landowner.
Tea and coffee in propper mugs you can take back if you are on break, plastic ones with lids to go,it would work out cheaper for you aswell, tops of sauces kept clean ,i like it when they have a choice of sauces, mustards and relishers for burgers and hotdogs ,i dont take sugar but i dont like it when they have a bowl on the counter with crusty brown lumps in a spoon thick in sugar.

Fab idea.
Also, organise a stand up comic on a Thursday and Friday afternoon, a live band twice a week and all the food served by lovely young things.
Knock up a little marquee with chandeliers and a fountain as well so drivers all feel at home. A masseuse every Wednesday afternoon and for the weekend lads, Sky Sports on a widescreen TV so they can keep up with the footie!
As above, you could get a old f1 trailer that the drivers get fed and watered and chill out,in fact just buy a truckstop, ,i dont think some people realise its got to be packed into a van everyday
Thinking about it maybe set your sights higher and find some land, open a truckstop and then go from there…
£10 a night to park including £2 off a meal + free shower + free wifi + discount coupon for next visit.
Then consider reserved parking for an extra £2, payable over the phone so drivers can pre-book their space in the day and if they don’t turn up by a set time its lost and your £2 up for doing bugger all.
Oh and an on site shop (reasonable prices), fuel / adblue etc
Think big
Strippers on a Friday and parking fee increased to £15 for said strippers
Also get on the snap list to get them flocking in.
Large initial investment maybe but get it right and you could be on the way to multiple sites UK / Europe wide, maybe one for Dragons Den I reckon the women on there have had a trucker or two in their time (allegedly)…
Edit: Forget strippers it will just lower the tone, ■■■■■■■ waitress’s all week round maybe better, aka ‘Hooters/Top-Bollox Truckstop’.
Pack your stuff in small portions, nothing is as ugly as big packs of bacon and sausages lying open on the site.
Seen a van with salad leaves packed in small portions, made a hell lot of difference to the limp crap you get a some places.
Use decent quality cooking oil, nothing is worse as the smell of cheap cooking oil.
And cook your onions very slowly to go with my hotdog
Something like this

The little white thing on the right
Not everyone eats meat ( 3 million vegetarians in the UK according to the Vegetarian Society)
So perhaps a little thought in terms of menus

Noooooo…do not cater for Veggies they are traitors to our race and have no place in this profession…Oh alright do a lettuce and dust sandwich for them but thats it
Animals are bread for food, end of, our place in the food chain is earned by birthright this vegan / vegetarian nonsense has to stop.
Course there would be more vegetarians if we all had to kill our own meat but i would not be one of them.
Some fantastic ideas and some funny recommendations too.
It’s all good and helps me no end. Many thanks so far.

Full breakfast in a tray or a breakfast on a massive breadcake[belly buster]allways seem popular with propper men, have on of them and your set for the day
employ a complete scrubber with mega ■■■■■,make sure she has them hanging out on display along with the mini,or sprayed on jeans… eyepatch thong hanging out the top would be a bonus, and you can sell any old manky tat you like, there will still be a queue of harry hardons at the counter…if you want to go up market, employ a similar single parent of the same ilk,but with her tattoos spelt correctly.if you use quality grub, then you have to charge more, and although everyone would prefer to eat it,then the price will put them off, personally I always buy a roll and egg.( at least you know where the eggs been)…

And I find it very difficult to disagree with any of the above.lol thanks
Do healthy options. Not all truck drivers are fat lazy ■■■■■■■■ with high cholesterol and a desire to die young.
Grilled chicken (using quality chicken not processed ■■■■) would be nice in fresh bloomer/baguette. Possibly tuna/fish etc. But would need to be high quality. If it’s poor, it won’t work, and drivers will steer clear.
You still need the bacon.sausage etc. It’s nice to have occasionally. Personally, i generally take my own food. But that’s because I don’t want to eat rubbish ll the time and it’s hard to find decent grub from a snack van.

‘… how can I improve my service …?’
Standby for a social hand-grenade:
Maybe fly a flag for ethical products (ie non-Islamifying stuff) - and really bigging-up the essential piggy-based necessities?
For fear of either rattling ‘The Prophet’, waking our deaf/blind Government or rousing the “it all tastes the same” merchants, my current Big Kick is supporting ethical (British, Gold Standard & non-cruel) slaughter
Being on PM’s, - all pork gets abandoned as all roadside scoff goes flippin Halal after 2pm
Maybe offer a pm pro-pork Service?
good bread is a must none of them soft flowery roll’s that disintegrate as soon as you put a bit of sauce on them crusty/brown /French stick’s for us still with teeth
