I park a lot at a certain place and there is definatley some sort of scam going. All the drivers are very cagey and all run old tackle, as soon as it hits 8pm they fire up and are off. There’s normally a fella in an English reg car knocking about with them as well.
is this place in Kent not far from eurotunnel ? If so I’ve seen the same thing. I had it down as 10 pm though.
English bmw, and the lorries are all parked in France, I don’t want to say to much as you don’t know who reads the forums.
Know what you mean. There is a place where I park sometimes , close to the tunnel. And I often see strange goings on after 10 pm.
suspect we are talking about the same place, have always wondered what the particular scam was … Was in a calais truck stop just the other night , there was the usuall number of english lads driving old motors. An english car turned up and one by one they would all leave on the instruction of the car driver. But i did find it odd that previous to there boss turning up they weren’t exactly quiet . And yes they did seem to be keeping some sort of score . Next morning i got a tug off ukba at dover, whilst on the bay i was joined by one of the fellas that i had seen previously. Excuse my intelligence but what would happen then as i wasnt able to stop around to watch the show.

they just impound the lorry. they don’t bother arresting the driver, it costs too much.
you should have hung around, you could have given him a lift.
Yeh from what I hear. Lorry gets seized and driver gets a fine. Depending on exactly what he’s up to. But fines never get paid as Hmrc won’t take them to court. I have absolutely no idea if any of it is true though. Just rumours.
It was an open secret in the 80’s and early 90’s that rice in bulk was being shipped across the North sea to small East coast ports from Antwerp then being reshipped back. It wasn’t by the lorry load but by the ship load (500 ton to 1000 ton a time) I know this for a fact 'cos I did quite a few of them. The tonnages were massive but so were the payouts, but legal under the rules at the time.

You are correct that HMRC don’t take you to court, but the solicitors they use do (Drydensfairfax). HMRC just issue the fine then as soon as the last date of fine payment has passes it gets passed onto the solicitors.

My dad used to load coal in Gydnia, sail to England, the coal was then re-classified as English coal, then sail for another near continental port and unload. I’ve also heared tipper drivers say that they used to deliver grain to coasters in east coast ports, the coaster would sail on the tide in to international waters, return on the next tide and the same tippers would reload the same grain and re-deliver somewhere else in England. How true this is I dont know, but it sounds somewhat similar to the rice from Antwerp.

Thought it sounded too easy.
There’s no fine of any sort any longer, just the seizure.
It speaks volumes about this forum lately when we have to snipe at each others punctuation and spelling! A lot of drivers are not the best educated so why possibly humiliate them?

As a ■■■■■■, who pays the haulier money then? I don’t understand who pays the bills and fuel if you just drag a trailer on a round trip without actually delivering/collecting goods - or does the gov pay something?
