All our lorries are genuine factory built Dennis ,the only stretched ones were the 2 ex Jack Richards ERFs and a DAF 95 which have now gone overseas .

Cheers Dennis.
Well actually over at Uttoxeter they did some over the yrs ,2 Foden 3 Scania a Volvo and Daf + Erf all units made in to 6 & 8 wheeler cranes done in house ,in fact the Scanias after running for 3 or 4 yrs sold on made a profit on the initial buying and making cost
I drove plenty of the tipper and tanker versions!
Pete.
DEANB:
Coomsey ,think you drove one of these ?0
8whlr tipper Dean, for a month on nights, holiday cover, out of ARC Whitwick quarry in the very hot summer of 76. 3 Milton Keynes a night on dry stone, good money but well bored by the end. They had 4 J reg half cabs nicknamed Animal. I didn’t mind it, especially being able to open nearside window. Went back onto Bathgate Reiver much better beast! Cheers Coomsey
We had several of the three axle version of those dumpers, I rebuilt a couple of the 220 ■■■■■■■ engines in them.
Pete.
IMHO Fodens “conned” their way through the transport industry for many many years until reality dawned on Operators and they realised what bags of ■■■■■ Fodens really were, I’m sorry if I ruffle a few feathers but Fodens really were the “Pits” and inferior to “you name it” ERF’s, Atkinsons, Seddon 32/4’s and YES! even Leyland and Scammell ! Others may hold differing opinions !

I think your opinion Dennis comes from the fact that your operation was a run of the mill type one using standard lorries ( crapkinsons )for a simple job that was the same everyday, a bit like spotting a Tesco or Sainsbury’s lorry ,where as the operator who chose Foden was more of a specialist haulier who knew how to spec a lorry

Well Dan’l what made a Foden so different and unique that “Erfkinsons” couldn’t do the same job just as well and probably better, and the same goes for the DAF cabbed Badged Fodens I stuck faithfully with British built Atkinsons and ERF’s until the mid 70’s when I bought the first of a number of F88’s and 111’s which were, sad to say, in a new era. I did though buy about ten Sed/Atks during late '75 through to '77 but sorry to say they weren’t in the same league as the Scandinavians. The new ERF B and C series were decent motors but again no match for the Scans !
However, the dear old Foden never ever was considered by me as a contender among the Atkinsons, ERF’s, Big J’s and Seddon 32/4’s. Neither did Foden ever figure in the large hauliers fleets like Suttons and SOM and I just bet Alf Sutton would have considered Foden and quickly discounted them as a viable alternative to Atkinson. Cheers Bewick.
Horses for courses Dennis . There were 7 quarries round Buxton at one time and 5 of them ran Foden fleets . Rough , rugged lorries that never went far , Liverpool was long distance . They had to cope with the Peak District terrain mostly , and the work they coped with would have killed an ERF . The only ERF fleet was flats for lime bag deliveries . Once Tarmac took over most of the quarries , they got whatever Tarmac got a good deal that week .
