Hi Larry ,12,500 I think ,cheers .edit the crane weighs 10 tonnes it self .
I took these in 2010. Couple of interesting old Fodens.
use a name:
Cheshire , still in front line service this foden.
Not exactly frontline service as it will only operate for 6months a year and then less than 5 hours per day
Just watched this, youtube.com/watch?v=kecLtO4l5QA
Foden centenary celebration 1856 to 1956, to me it’s brilliant when considering the detailed preparation of the floats, what a collection, a real effort from the workforce who obivously considered themselves extended family members of the Foden dynasty.
Oily
What a brilliant film Oiltreader! The chap on the Penny Farthing in the parade certainly made it move rapidly and covered some ground. For a smallish independant maker Foden’s had a diverse range of vehicles, I believe that at one time there were around a dozen different cab types on offer.
Pete.
If anyone’s interested, Smiths Bletchington have several Alphas withdrawn in their yard with the Smiths livery removed. They’re all runners except my old 54 plate six wheeler. The 56 regs are still working but I’ve been told their days are numbered once more new trucks arrive.

Obviously the '54 plate had a bad driver on it at some time during it’s life !
Evening all,
That little film was stupendous Oily…many thanks for posting it.
I can only remember Fodens with great affection…from 63, up to 69 I drove them with “gusto”…4LKs, Lw`s 150s, then 180s, Leyland .680s, and every one never really let me down. They were as good as the rest, and in many ways better than most.
I remember showing some French and Italian lads one balmy night in the south of France just what a superb gearbox the 12 speed really was…they were amazed just how quickly you could change ranges, and gears…like a motorcycle, you “rode” the lorry…and they had nothing as good!
But from the sedate splendour of the alloy and wood S20, well, they went down…the plastic pig, the S21, Micky Mouse…then the “wobbly” tilt cab S36…was it ever structurally sound?.. the great looking , (from the outside), S39…(mine always looked and smelled rather like an early Porta Loo in hot weather)…and boy was it cold in the …cold!..but with a Leyland .680 she was a real power house…(but to my cost I discovered that the worm drive axle seals did not like any speed over 55 mph…and what a dirty job to change them)!
Wonderful lorries…but of a time…and for whatever reason…they never moved on…
If Renault/Mack had bought them …well would it have been better long term?..I really do not know…but Chuck Piggot was a real business man, If it d`ont have a future profit…then its out!..That is why Paccar works…
But the exact philosophy is followed by Volvo…so Foden would have been out anyway!
Why could we not have had a truly British lorry “giant”?..now there is a question…
Cheerio for now.

Off ■■■■. Please rearrange. I think it had several. It did have one very steady driver who wasn’t allowed back on it but he’s now earning more elsewhere and doesn’t have lots of rules and regs and colleagues to offend.
I assume that is Foden’s own band (the one carted about in a Foden single-decker) that we can hear playing the sound track. Robert
I can’t say i’m a foden fan , but they earned me a good living over many years . starting with a 1951 fg through all the models mentioned plus the haul master arctic and finally a double drive with a 290 roller . Had a few years on erf and then went back to the old firm to a foden alpha . Back in the 50s and 60s if you’d cut the head off a buxton haulier you would have seen foden in their neck like a stick of rock . Lorries well suited to lumbering up the derbyshire hills , even if you couldn’t stop them down t’other side . Particularly good if a visit to sandbach was required , free 3 course lunch provided while there and the works canteen was the equal of any modern restaurant . I have to differ with Saviem on the s39 , my favourite , fitted round you like a plane cockpit , everything to hand and a window made to rest the elbow while admiring the passing ladies . all gone in the dim and distant past now , but the memories linger on . dave
