Foden Tipper Tributes

Nice pics John, I will post some of my old sandbach special when I get to grips with this.
Regards

Hmm, Jack Clarke in NNU 914 J, the first half cab that I drove after passing my test at Tilcon! Probably London bound on the M1. One of the 24 tonners with the Gardner 6LXB engine, they were too short to get uprated so were disposed of after a few years. The bumpers were later painted white, Fred Rhead from Oakamoor had it when I started there in 1975 and at that time it was based at our Kevin quarry at Ramshorn near Alton Towers.

Pete.

Timeless classic…

Dan Punchard:
To make aFoden get an ERF and add water.
hiya…nice one Dan…truth was get a foden have a family row (easy done)and you get a ERF.

Lawerance !!! all your Fodens remind me of Sellars and Kent lorries…

have a good xmas to all Foden men
cheers John

Armstrong:
There are two types of clutch used in Fodens, Spicer and Lipe…I have always fitted the Lipe ones in mine and had 7 years out of one, they are not what I would call heavy and shouldn’t be anyway as all the 3000 and 4000 models have air assisters fitted, if the clutches are adjusted properly so the clutch stop works then there shouldn’t be any grinding from neutral into gear.

Nigel, did you have to sort the ex Smiths’ motors’ clutch? She could be a pain towards the end, although it did idle a bit fast, as most of Smiths ■■■■■■■ motors did.
I’ve got some pics of W844 if you’d like some emailed/posted?

Posted these for Armstrong (will email you some others too)

Hi Nathan, I would appreciate the pics mate, I have had the flywheel refaced and done the rear crank seal whilst I was in there and fitted a new clutch, if you could pm your email?
Regards Nigel

I’ve emailed you Nigel, just sorting some pics to send you.

I overheard someone on the cb a while back mocking the fact this is still working. I just had to point out it carries almost 21t, gets the same rate/ton as a new one and if there’s no work, the bank aren’t likely to come knocking.

Sister to Armstrongs’ motor. When it was a spare, I’d parked in M40 Oxford services one day during a VOSA walkaround. VOSA ignored it but went around the bling machine nextdoor. Encouraged no doubt by Mr Blings’ attitude towards them
This old girl survives and is working in the Great Malvern area.

Rugby Foden Liteweight 6.jpgHi, All,

Here’s some of Rugby Cement’s Fodens. The Liteweight 6 was a good motor until they put the cab on !!
180LXB Double drive, Foden 8 ■■ speed box 16.5ton payload at 24 ton, They are the pluses. Awful steering like trying to steer a road roller it was that low geared, having to bend your head all the time to see under the header rail, constantly banging your head on the door frame when you got out . I suppose if you drove one every day you would get used to this.
The other two were good all round trucks, the S83’s failing was that it was single drive. It also was fitted with the Foden 8■■ speed box. And them big headlights were no good when they got mucky.

The last one was fitted with a Fuller 9 speed box that was cable operated and when they had been stood for the weekend in frosty/icy weather you struggled to get gears until things got warmed through

Cheers Bassman
