Foden Thoughts

Hello NZ Jamie and eveybody.

This is not a wind up - but you could be trying to wind up me.

1.I cannot produce any written evidence in regard to the Foden Sabrina name being
written in books and magazines-yet. But it will happen sooner or later.

2.Forum member,Sepo,on referring to the Foden Sabrina Cab,said “I’ve had this conversation loads of times with different people over the years and I’m almost sure this must be a regional thing, but the S39 was reffered to as I remember…” The Foden Sabrina name might be universal on
British fairgrounds, but,as Sepo says,it’s a local thing in various parts of the country,i.e the
United Kingdom in regard to the road transport industry.Wobbe Reitsma has spent most of his life living in his native Holland…no wonder he’s never heard of the Foden Sabrina name - but he
has now.Thanks to the Internet.

3.In the early 1960s the S21 Spaceship Sputnik Cab was briefly nicknamed “Sabrina” for a period, but not many people knew about this until the advent of the Internet, and I have not seen
anything about it in books and magazines. But there are a few refferances to it on the Internet.

4.So just because a word,or subject,or name,or whatever is not in print in book and/or magazine form does not mean to say that word,or name,or whatever, does not exist. The Foden S24,S34,S36 and
S39 Sabrina name has been in use for above thirty-five years - Sepo’s father was driving a Foden
S39 Sabrina in the early 1970s at least, and they called Foden S24’s,S34’s,S36’s and S39’s Sabrina.
As I’ve already stated,British Leyland introduced the AEC Yellowline (As Good As Gold) and Guy Greenline Lorry ranges in July 1970. Many books and magazine articles on AEC (especially AEC) and
Guy have been written and published during the last thirty years and more, but no mention is made
in these publications about AEC Yellowlines and Guy Greenlines!!! And,as I say,Peter Davies,THE
Peter Davies, didn’t know anything about the AEC Yellowline and Guy Greenline names until he read about them on the BIGLORRYBLOG Website in 2010 or 2011,at least forty years later!!!

5.Thus the written word is not everything! As has been proved, things can exist without ever being written about in book and/or magazine form. And even if it has,it can be forgotten about,as in the case of the AEC Yellowline and Guy Greenline names.

6.Somebody on Flickr the other other day mentioned the Leyland Mouth Organ and Leyland Waterfall
Cab’s.I know these names and what they are refferring to,many travelling showmen and some lorry
enthusiasts do,too. But many other people probably have never heard of these names.
Again, and just because these names have probably never appeared in print in book/and or magazine
form does not mean that they do not exist - they are still out there!

7.Sepo has ALREADY CONFIRMED THE EXISTENCE of the Foden S24 Sabrina,S34 Sabrina,S36 Sabrina and S39 Sabrina name(s),so have I and so have many other people on the Internet:There is no need to question me,because the objective facts are what I have already written about this subject, and that the Sabrina name is actually used as a name for the Foden S24 Sabrina,Foden S30 Sabrina,
S34 Sabrina,S35 Sabrina,S36 Sabrina,S37 Sabrina,S38 Sabrina and S39 Sabrina Cabs.
AHA! - HERE WE GO AGAIN! You mean to say that you have never heard of the S30,S35,S37 and S38 Cabs? You have now - the power of the Internet - it’s probably the first time that they have
been written about on the Internet, and in book form:Foden Special Vehicles…although these
cab designations have existed for above forty years…it’s the same old familiar story.

8.I now quote the publisher of the above said book in regard to my Amazon UK review of it,Retriever:“Not so much a review, more like an exercise in minutea! Retriever”

It is really obvious that you,Retriever,do not like me (and probably anyone else for that matter) criticizing any of the books that you have published. But,and with respect,as a publisher,
‘If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen’."
And since Wobbe Reitsma,Peter Davies,Graham Edge, etc, are actually dealing in the self-same
fascinating minutia (one of the main reasons for their books in the first place!) as I am - I
am in very good company.

That’s probably two or three enemies that I have already made on this Forum-Website,and I’ve only written two posts so far! OH WELL,Fleetwood Mac.

RENÉE PILOT.

NZ JAMIE:
Well I’m not sure mate,

I’ve had a very keen interest in road transport and trucks for as long as I can remember. I spend a lot of time reading truck related books and magazines I also spend far too much time on sites such as these learning new things about different makes and models.

Over the years I’ve spoken with many people in the road transport industry.

I would say I have a fairly varied and informed knowledge of trucks from many different manufacturers,to the point of being a certified truck nerd.

I’ve a whole wall sized book shelf with over 600 hundred magazines and in excess of 100 different truck books and I can safely say that I’ve never ever seen, read, heard or come across any reference to a Foden of any model being refereed to as a Sabrina.

ERF yes, most defiantly and I’m sure many will agree with me on this, but a Foden not ever.

I’m not saying you’re wrong mate, you can call a truck what ever you please, but I can’t ever recall a Foden being given this name.

I’d be very interested if you could produce any written material of the said Foden Sabrina.

If I didn’t know better I’d think your having a wind up!

Cheers Jamie

Hi I am Eddie the bloke that commented on the review in Amazon NZ Jamie your post puts you and I on a level par I to ate and slept lorries / trucks and I drove and worked with Fodens over the years and never at any time have I heard them refered to as Sabrinas and I traveled all over the UK on general haulage and met and talked with drivers in digs, cafes, etc. ERF Sabrina aye Foden no Eddie.

A Peter Davies photo of a ERF “Sabrina”, so knicknamed apparently because its bulbous front resembled a shapely female showbiz personality of that time!

Just found this:
mk-marketing.eu/e-Pamphlets/ … mphlet.pdf

It could apply to any of the GB lorry manufacturers at any time since the war, not just Foden. I was going to put it on the “what went wrong” thread, but the search thing would not find it- has that thread been deleted or something?

I’ve just remembered that when Dad went onto a G reg 4300 around '92, it had a cassette tape in it with advice on how to get the best out of the engine. The narrator had an American accent. I take it this would’ve only been given to Cat powered wagons but does anyone else remember these tapes being given out?

Muckaway:
Why were Fodens offered with constant mesh 'boxes until the 4000 series production ended?
I coped well with them but one colleague when he started, returned to the yard complaining the 8spd 'box in his 3000 series was knackered…He’d never driven a crash box before and thought they’d vanished in the '70s.

Daf MAN and iveco offered them until the mid 90s too.

3 Fodens at the Great Dorset Steam Fair today

What a find, but also what a shame that this Mickey Mouser has been left like this, it must have been there a long time by the look of it, Where abouts is it located, Regards Larry

Hi Larry, they are in Berkshire, they all belong to a friend of a friend, keeps them all a bit secret & only shows them to invited guests! He has others of other makes that I have just put on the Oxford thread, he has others in old garages, others that are fully restored & he uses for various tasks, & others in his workshops being restored to a fantastic standard, all the work being done by himself from the chassis up!
Regards Chris

Thank you Chris, Its nice to know that he has a great interest in what he does, Regards Larry.

Hi there on this site that can give a history of Foden trucks models and the years that there were made ? Thanks Tony

Here’s a thought on Fodens:

From 1963 to 1973(ish), they produced lorries with the following cabs:
S21 “Mickey Mouse” type.
S34/S36/S39, options for fixed or tilting, split or single screen.
S40/S41 small Motor Panels type.
S90 big MP type.
S60 full and half cab versions.
S?, that other half-cab one on the dumpers
S80.

Do you think that, if they had concentrated their design/drawing office efforts on one cab, they could have afforded a set of press tools and ended up with a decent steel cab to compete more strongly with the Continental manufacturers?

Just looking back a few threads I have found mswer . Thanks Tony

Voted “best working old timer” at Moorgreen show earlier this Month, dont know how they new my Mrs was still working

te foden looks well dave , but i’m not so sure about the dodgy geezer stood in front of it ! the young lady looks very nice though . ps you get more like your old man every day ( tin hat on ) cheers , dave

My dad used to drive a Foden 8 wheel tanker for ICI in the 50’s and I used to nick off school to go with him from ICI Billingham to ICI Heysham, there would maybe be 5 or 6 trucks going in convoy over the A-66, and down past Devils bridge.
I used to love that journey and got spoiled rotten by the other drivers, especially at Stainmore cafe and at Devil’s bridge.
It was a full days journey, one way, with B&B in Morcambe, the night men would load the truck at Billingham with 5,000 gals of methanol and a night man at Heysham would offload it.
By the time I was doing the same job in the 70’s with Suttons of St. Helens and Bobby Durhams of TeesSide the job had been cut up so much I used to have to load myself, haul ■■■ over there, offload and haul ■■■ back AND load up for the night man
