Sharples of Eardisley ran Foden’s for over fifty years, buying two new Fodens every year. Some were rigid eight wheel tippers with the rest of the fleet being artics on steel haulage.
Most of Sharples artics had coil wells, with some like this on hauling sand on tipping trailers to the South Wales steel plants and coils back to the Midlands and North.

I’ll try to get back to Fodens by saying I reckon a Foden Alpha, Cat engine and Daf auto 'box would be a seller in the tipper sector.Hi Nathan, the Alpha cab & Cat I can understand, you know more about tippers than me so I stand to be corected, but I would have thought you would go for a manual box out of choice for site/quarry work etc?
Regards ChrisWould have to agree, the DAF 4 over 4 would seem a good choice (What our 8 legger has).
I’m an auto convert as of last Friday; I had a 4 over 4 on my old 4340 but like our manual CFs, it needs another gear above 50mph. My Alphas got the 12 spd rang/split and this is excellent all round.
I think I’m getting old, anything that makes my life easier works for me nowadays . My new Scania is auto & just to sit there & point her & watch the world go by is great

Thats because your a sad [zb] who needs to get a life all because one person doesnt like what you like.God help your kid he will be made to like what you like
He’s of the opinion that Fodens made a mistake with the S39 cab: Granted Mickey Mouse suited the '60s but the S39 did look antiquated when compared to European manufacturers offerings of the mid '70s…
He’s very advanced for a one year old

By the way Nathan, the Foden at Cherries in Joe Dean colours you asked about, Richard said it was sold to a mate of Matt (Cherry fitter that has now emigrated to New Zealand), but he ran the engine dry & blew it up so it was scrapped . Richard was peed off cos he said it was a good motor that he had thought about buying at the time & wishes he had!
That’s a bloody disgrace,Chris; That motor never broke down in the 10 years Smiths ran it. It was in good condition when I saw it at Cherrys’ and I’dve thought a new engine would’ve got it going again…Godfrey Smith’ll be turning in his grave…
I’m driving a Volvo fm tipper with I shift and it’s a great gearbox and no problems off road.
a question is there other daf aplictions of foden then ALPHA?
With a kn…d like you for a dad he will grow up one aswell
Talking about growing up… why dont you? Saying you think all Fodens are sh*te is your choice… shame your views are not based on fact … or maybe your dad didnt like them… ■■
Bma when Paccar bought Daf they offered either the fibreglass cab or the steel Daf 75/85 series until 99-2000 when the fibreglass cab was stopped. A new cf cab was then stuck on the traditional rubber suspension was badged as a Foden with Cat or ■■■■■■■ engines. I don’t know when Perkins engines were no longer offered though.

Caterpillar bought Perkins in the late 90’s Nathan,so I would think the Perkins engines were phased out soon after.
Cheers Dave.

BMA a point here about how long lasting Fodens are; I sat in a brand new Cat powered one in 1989 as a boy…I got to drive it almost 15 years later still with same engine and tipper. It was sold when my Foden arrived. We used to have a policy of not replacing until it was too expensive to repair and the lorry could earn more working a day or two a week than it was to sell it.
