Foden S39 for resto

Hi all,

Found a 1972 S39 to put into preservation, 8 leg tipper, complete, not moved in 10 years :open_mouth:

Anyone any idea what I should be paying realistically?

What sort of money do they go for when done? Can’t say I have ever seen one for sale.

Just weighing up the viability of getting the old girl fixed up.

Cheers

Hi Mikey
Here’s another one when youv’e finished yours good luck.
John

looks about as good as the one I have found.

Not Rush Green is it by any chance?

what part of the world is it in>? what’s the history of it?

no idea on cost - but would imagine that cab framing will need looking at… which engine is it?

any pictures?

Its in Pearsons yard in Coventry awaiting restoration.

WOW super job it’s been seved get it restored I want a drive. Was it Hoveringhams■■? Did it start ok it looked like it might run.
good luck.
John.

Well worth doing up that one, she will look the bogs dollocks when finished

Heres the one I found,

Gardner 180 in it, slightly vandalised.

Looks like a good base for a restoration, The body looks tidy, The wiring loom may be a pain i had a artic in 74 it was 2 years old and the wiring connectors
all went green and the electrics didn’t want to work. Not to say to much but the Ash frame goes rotten and sometimes the doors fall off.( Light joke )
I think its a better cab than ERF, Foden is one peice fibre glass with Ash door pillars where ERF is four peices fastened by means of a wooden frame, and several floor and bonnat side bits and bobs.I must say the foden looks a nice motor.
good luck John.

That would make a nice project! The first vehicle that I drove loaded was an S39 tanker, the doors hangers were a problem even when only a few years old let alone 30+. Foden wiring was also a weak point and we used to replace a lot of it, even on the later S80 and 83 models, but once it was done there were no further problems. The cab’s are tiltable as well on the S39 which was handy for engine block changes, I THINK that we removed the radiator and after removing the internal bonnet panels and removing the two rear mounting bolts the cab could be tilted with a block and tackle etc leaving the drivers seat, floor and steering column in place. Of course the earlier model did have a proper tilt cab, actually the first on a UK truck. Good luck, I am envious!!

Pete.

Hi, I looked on this forum for the first time the other night and was very suprised to see a picture of this lorry as its mine! Yes the lorry was new to Hoveringham in 1970 and was one of the first Fodens brought by Pearsons in 1972. They got two on the same day from Comer Hill Garages, AAL720H (Which caught fire on the M6 & was written off) and AAL712H Which was driven by my dad until it was sold in around 1979 to Houghey Construction who ran it for a couple of years then it was sold and It stood in Rush Green Motors for almost 30 years. It fired up with a jump start and some fresh fuel!

AAL712H is currently in our workshops undergoing a major restoration.

If anyone has any more info or pictures of this vehicle i would love to see them as we dont have any pictures of when it was working.

Cheers, Ashley Pearson

Hello Ashley and welcome to the forums. I assume you’re John’s lad?

If so; I spoke with your Dad a couple of years ago when he first restored KNN616E, still hoping to see it in the flesh one of these days.

Your primary source of info on these forums is likely to be Nigel Hunt, who posts under “nigelhunt” on here; what he don’t konw about Hoveringham lorries of that era ain’t worth knowing!

My old man, Bob Scrivener, worked for Hoveringham for 43 years as a fitter at Hoveringham quarry. He’d have been very proud to see what you and your Dad have achieved. Thank you.

Hi did’nt know KNN was one of your restorations i saw her at the Smallwood show. When the Foden gathering was there . WELL when AAL is looking
like KNN that will be a nice sight, Are you going Hoveringham livery or Pearsons??. How long do you expect it to be before AAL is finished??.
John.

I was driving one the same for Peter Hedges of Pilling when when I met the guy in Ellel quary who introduced me to M/E, I remember it had a huge crack in the chassis and every night before I went home I would get it welded up, very scarey!

I think we will put this one back into Pearsons colours because we owned it in the 70’s but you never know! May change my mind yet!
