Happy Days…
Townshends’ of Worcester sold Albion Mill to the Royal Porcelain Company around '59-60. In December 1960 it was partly destroyed in a massive fire caused by the use of acetylene torches, used to cut up the redundant milling machinery.
The mill is now a pricey block of flats.

Happy Days…
bowmans flour are still in business-i live about half a mile from their mill…
I used to love travelling around the mills with my father back in the 60’s. He drove for Laws Transport of Whitley, Reading, and had an early Mark 5 Seddon with a flatbed body fitted with wooden high sides. It had three trapdoors in the floor and whatever didn’t fall out had to be shovelled and swept! Later came a fibreglass cabbed Seddon with a Leyland engine and gearbox, this had a Tamplin bulk tank with auger discharge powered by a Briggs donkey engine. He also carried bags in this, collecting from Fisons at Barking, Spillers at Silvertown (six hour waits to load at these was normal!) or Silcocks at Avonmouth which meant a slow crawl back up Marlborough Hill on the A4, I used to lean out and count the wheelnuts!!
Local mills were Sonning (where an ancient Peerless lorry lay derelict) Sindlesham and Sandford which were all owned by Witherington & Over Brother’s, Twyford (Berks) owned by the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Farmers, Calcot (where I once saw a family of Rats tipped into the grain from off of a pallet, the operator said “Don’t worry lad, they will mix in OK”) and James at Hungerford. Sayers of Newbury ran old four potter Albions on similar work. Most of the mills are now apartment’s alas, happy days of long ago.
Pete.
Bradshaws of Driffield, still going strong today

One of mine on Heygates weighbridge at Bugbrooke, Northants, loaded for Fine Lady Bakery Manchester
Is it true Heygates own/have a large share in Fine Lady? We supply FL with wholemeal in tankers and organic in totes to Banbury and Manchester.
Talking of FL, has anyone seen any of ther own branded bread in shops recently? I’ve not seen it for ages. Anagency mate told me the other day that FL make bread for Aldi so perhaps they’ve dropped their own brand?

Yes, a five pot belly tank, new in 1998, ex-Spillers / ADM.

Yes, Heygates own Fine Lady outright. And yes most of Fine Lady’s output is own label bread for supermarkets including Aldi. They also have plenty of business with the sandwich makers. We do white flour into FLB Manchester out of Bugbrooke, and occasionally Nelstrops at Stockport, and stoneground wholemeal out of ADM Corby mill back into FLB Manchester.
Robbins & Powers, Coventry. Two unusual BMC grain tippers with third axle conversation. Don’t know much about this miller except it was acquired by Spillers and closed down not long after the takeover.
Hosegood’s Mill, Avonmouth. It never milled a sack of flour under Hosegood’s ownership, the Hosegood’s consortium that built it went bust before it was completed and it was bought by Spillers. Now owned by ADM Milling and still in production.

Is that the one that’s had scaffolding around it for ages?
This is a bulk only mill now all the bags are trunked in from Corby by Downtons I think.
