Flour Millers

pete smith:
A couple of photos of Timmis and Tudor, their mill was near Montford Bridge Shrewsbury,it was a ind est for a few years but now been demolished and houses now built on site,Cheers Pete

Great period shots Pete, thanks for posting flourpower.

Brilliant pics there. I remember when I used to ride with dad in his bulker during school holidays in the 60’s we used to tip at Sonning Mill on the Thames. At that time it was owned by Witherington and Over Brothers (they had several mills in the Thames Valley region) and at the rear of the mill was dumped a lovely old Peerless flatbed lorry. I often wonder what happened to it but with Goodeys scrapyard just up the road near Twyford I guess that it ended up there. The mill is now a theatre I believe.

Pete.

Thank you for reply’s Gents, Don’t know if i have posted first pic before, it is of J.N Miller Wolverhampton in the fifties i reckon, second pic what it looks like now,but it will be put out of its misery soon as it is down to be demolished to make way for the tram terminus, and third pic the Foden steamers what Millers ran,Cheer’s Pete Ps.I have a few pics of the inside of the mill from 40’s/50’s,no trucks on them i’m afraid but if you would like to see them, give me a yes!!

Dear all,
New to the forum, hope I’m not breaking any rules by jumping in. I was very pleased to see the posts about JN Miller of Wolverhampton, I worked there for a time in 1979/1980 and have been saddened by the lengthy saga of the old building and recently its demolition.

I recognise the Clydesdale in Pete Smith’s post 2464, and remember drivers like Derek Holyoake (Donnington ■■■■) Ray Hall, and Ray Duncombe. Also Graham Moulding, who was a driver but went on to be a sales rep, Mr Banks the Mill manager (?) and Sinclair Coghill the transport manager.

Googling for images of the Old Steam Mill brought up an article in the Black Country Bugle featuring Norman Holding who I remember as the mill foreman.

I would love to see more pictures of the Mill and the lorries if you have them. Sadly I don’t have any photos, just a 6lb linen flour sack that my mum still uses for her sewing kit.

Thanks for sharing them and bringing back memories,

Stuart

Hi Stuart, Bill Smith was my Dad the mechanic, I think I have posted all the photos I have, but I will check back through my posts to make sure, all flattened now I’m afraid, Cheer’s Pete

Thanks again Pete, I think I remember Bill Smith, it’s a long time ago now!

I was told that the mill was one of the last cast iron construction mills left in the country, the rest having been destroyed by explosions. Apparently mill dust is more explosive than coal dust, and anything that could cause a spark is not good.

As you say, all gone now, but thanks for bringing back some memories.

Has redevelopment started on Healings Mill, Tewkesbury, yet?

Been sold to a developer who put plans in for the top half this side of the river for town houses etc then put it back onto the market looks rather sad now will be 10 years since it shut in November 16.

That leaning silo will demolish itself by then. I bet the owners thought that the residents would’ve welcomed houses over flour lorries with open arms. Clearly hasn’t been the case.

FWP Matthews have now bought tipping trailers and collect their own wheat, a mate of mine does this and he has a nice easy job of it. He was on the phone about two weeks ago, one load of mill sharps (muesli  ) to Bowerings Feeds at Bridgewater then a grain collection from a farm near Shipton on Stour back to the mill. Job and day done. Shame they didn’t order any rigid tippers when I was there, I might not’ve left.
I don’t miss the handball, awkward customers and 15 hour days from doing the bag work though.
