CLARK&BUTCHER SOHAM CAMBS
Another Norfolk flour milling firm.
Duffields ceased milling flour in the 1980’s and now concentrate on animal feedstuffs.

Basil L. Leeder ceased flour milling around 15 years ago to concentrate on animal feedstuffs. The defunct fleet has been auctioned off now as they have now packed up completely.

Pete Smith; That was me you saw by Long Compton. Had a “spare day”. Basically it’s when the rostered drivers don’t have a set run for the day, so you normally get drops that are too big or not regular enough to fit onto one of the rostered routes. I’d done 4 pallets to a bakery near the Black Country Museum and 6 pallets to a food service company in Skelmersdale.
I would’ve pm’d you but I can’t. (Sounds like an Orville song )
Down to Brighton, Steyning and Chichester tomorrow…

FLOURPOWER:
CLARK&BUTCHER SOHAM CAMBS
I think that Clark & Butcher must have used an inordinate quantity of chalk in the manufacture of their flour as the bulk wheatfeed/middlings/offal (depends where you live) which I used to load from Soham was heavier than any other mill I loaded from in fact I could get over 20 tons on a 46 cubic yard trailer.I would be lucky to get 11 tons on the same trailer from Healings or Reynolds or Priday Metford.
I’m on holiday down on the South Coast and while walking around West Quay at Southampton, I noticed a building in the distance “Solent Flour Mills.” Is it still operating? I know there’s a mill near the docks, it’s the reason Matthews wont/can’t send me across the water to Isle Of Wight.
Yes, Solent Flour Mills, (Rank Hovis), is still in business. It’s the second biggest output single mill in the country, after Allied’s Coronet Mill in Manchester.

Hi all, just found this thread and thought that you might like these, we used to live just around the corner from Simmons mill in Leighton Buzzard, I can remember the AEC’s and Commer’s from when I was a nipper, the horse & cart and Sentinels are just a bit before my time though!! There was a public weighbridge there and when I first started work, we used to take the new lorries to have them weighed to get the tare weight for the road tax, of course, everything that could be taken off was and with just enough diesel to get you there and back to get the weight as low as possible. They also had a bakery at the mill, the trading name was Snowwis, which you can see is Simmons backwards with the m’s turned upside down, quite clever, this became Mothers Pride. Unfortunately the mill and bakery closed and it is now an industrial site. The last 2 pics’ are from when I was driving for R K Browning in Leighton Buzzard in the 80’s, we had a contract with Croxton + Garry, running out of their works at Steeple Morden, Hertfordshire, one of the jobs was delivering to a lot of the mills in southern England, it was chalk powder, called Creta Preparata and had been added to flour to boost the calcium intake since the 2nd World War, I bet not many people know that they are eating chalk in their flour!! I presume that it is still added to this day.
All the best for now, Andy.
Andy
Great
I remember Derek having that picture taken up on the airfield of the fleet

Spot on Gary, the old airfield at Wing, it was a Sunday, I’ve got a few of the pics taken, it was a photo shoot for Croxton & Garry here are another couple, with Del Cains 320 Gardner powered C reg.
Cattle Wagon Man; It wasn’t me you saw today at Burton In Kendal. I was in sunny Park Royal although I’m due in ■■■■■■■ in 2 weeks time though. (I know pretty much where I’m going 12 weeks in advance-beat that Mr Stobart )
cattle wagon man:
The location at Grange over Sands is close to a bakery , andyou-know-who
on TNUK is probably the delivery driver.
Maybe the parked car is preventing easier delivery (Moffett f/l ), so its handball instead. Update probably later today , - when the driver regained his energy .  The bags on the pavement won
t get nicked ,- too many old folk in Grange .Cheers , cattle wagon man.
I should be up that way on Tuesday. As far as I know Grange is on (sadly). I’ll be boring and do the nce and sensible thing of having the sack truck facing uphill though.
