Flatbed drivers & lack of brooms!

I don’t know about the rest of you over here, but I cannot get over the amount of Flatbeds, Dropdecks etc that I see covered in lumps of dirt, stones, pieces of wood, remains of turf etc, all of which end up flying off all over the place as they go up the road  . Have’nt these drivers ever been introduced to a handy little tool called a broom? As far as I’m concerned it is just another prime example of the total lack of professionalism exhibited by so many American truckers,

When I drove Flatbeds back in the UK, the first thing you did after tipping was to thoroughly sweep off any debris left on the deck, not only does it make for a tidy appearance, it is also done in consideration for other road users, how would these idiots like it if some dipstick driving a flatbed comes past them dropping stones all over their car or even sending one through the windscreen? which is what happened to one of our drivers the other week, except that the stone hit his windscreen of his big truck and cracked it, he managed to get the flatbeds company phone number and called them up, the disinterested woman at the other end of the phone, asked if the stone came straight off the back of the truck or did it hit the road first, he told her it hit the road first then bounced up and hit his truck, the answer he got was, that as the stone hit the road first, then technically the stone came from the road before it hit his truck in which case they were not liable for objects coming from the road! with that she put the phone down on him!,
This is one of the loopholes over here and you can read it on the back of any dump truck etc, the signs always read "not responsible for objects coming from the road "
There has been many a time when either I am overtaking or being overtaken by flatbeds etc that debris has hit my truck (luckily with no major damage as yet), when I get on the CB with the drivers, in order to point out what has happened I am usually told to mind my own business along with the usual “you drive your truck and I’ll drive mine” or I will get the comments on being a cry baby!, never have I ever had an apology or even an acknowledgement that they are in the wrong! :imp: :smiling_imp:

And at the risk of winding Kate Hasler up again :unamused:  , I must say I don’t ever remember encountering this problem back home and certainly no-one ever encountered any flying debris from the flatbeds I drove!

Cliff its time u to come back home dude lol. Jesus im still tryin to get used to turnin right on a red lol…and im only in CA for a 6 months!!!
  :open_mouth:
Dave

HAHA… very funny cliff… I’ve had my windshield smashed by flying debris off of a flatbed… so NO arguments here. It’s a big problem up here where we live, with all the slate quarries in town ya can’t help get behind one of these idiots at some point. My ex has a slate business… (well sorta)… and he’s the only guy I know that would sweep his off… not just sweep… the wacko mopped it… but it was his own personal equipment, that could be why…other than him, I don’t know of any that bother. So point is well taken… and NOT wound up at all. (think I’m getting a bad reputation in here)

And last I knew, in New York State, if you carry stone, flatbed or dump, and its uncovered, they’re responsible for any damage to another vehicle. I got my windshield paid for… laws on this must vary from state to state, though not sure why…

■■■■ Kate! we finally agree on something  , Nice one on getting the windscreen paid for, yeah I s’pose the laws on liability do vary from State to State, mind you, which laws don’t! Sometimes it feels like yer travelling from one country to the another over here :unamused:

Dave

Yeah you got that right Dave, way past time for me to come home

What the hell you doing in Fruitcake country?, Must be a bit of a culture shock coming from Wigan to San Bernardino

Yeah, your right about those right turns, does taKe a little bit of getting used to :open_mouth:  Actually that is one of the few things I think they have got ‘right’ when it comes to traffic laws over here, just remember technically you must always come to a stop before turning ( Ask Ollie Dixon of TRUCK MAGAZINE, he knows all about the conseqeunces of not coming to a complete stop  )
Also remember that there are some lights you can’t turn on  :bulb:

AH but Cliff…I think if Jacko checks the DOT books in California, he doesn’t HAVE to come to a complete stop there. It’s known as a California rolling stop… (Unless the regulations are different for trucks). They only have to yield, Illegal in most other states though. Not sure why the ban on turning right on some red lights exists… if we’re capable of judging on one light, why not the next■■? Stupid isn’t it? Still prefer it to the roundabouts in the UK… I get nauseous on those… (but that might be because of the speed SOMEONE likes to be driving when we go around them… don’t recommend anyone ride with Pat in England if they have morning sickness! not that YOU’D have that problem hehehe )

Ha! Ha!, Kate, I hear you on the ‘someone’ Liking to take roundabouts a little on the fast side, but if you got morning sickness then you should ride with me, it ain’t the roundabouts I have fun with, it’s the humpback bridges, if I see one I have to go as fast as I can to see how airborn I can get :open_mouth: …it’s great fun!

Oh, and before the ‘Holier than thou lecturers’ from the PDF come over to this forum and give me a hard time on my driving habits, I only do that in a car…not in a Lorry!

I absolutely HATE bridges… well any that are longer than 30 feet and higher than 10… if I’m driving them I have to really concentrate… if I’m riding, I close my eyes (have a massive fear of heights)…So if ya want to take me over a bridge,… I suggest you either bring a blindfold… or plenty of vodka! And no more problems with the roundabouts… my morning sickness days are over! Last trip I actually found a couple of them kinda fun… haha

I guess this bridge will be a big no no for you then Kate.

AWWWWWW and I was looking forward to the vodka
