I’m a day man and yesterday, after many years of stubbornly avoiding, finally ended up doing my first ever night out - all a bit unplanned!
On the way back from London on the M1 yesterday afternoon the traffic was diabolical - just managed to get to Watford Gap with about 2 mins to spare of a 9hr drive. Figured I could do an extra hour as I had done no 10’s this week but needed to get back to Halesowen (M5 J2) which seemed pretty unlikely given the state of the slow traffic and the roadworks I know to be ahead.
Phoned the company and explained the situation (I’m just agency at the moment) and they promised to call me back - I must admit at this point I feared the worst! I could probably make it to Corley services and wait to be picked up by another driver I sort of imagined if push came to shove. Within five minutes they surprisingly did call back and I was rather taken aback by the answer they gave! Instructed to get to the hotel on the said services as they had booked me in overnight. Pretty decent of them I thought so packed up my stuff, trotted over to the reception to find it all done and dusted, room key waiting. Just to top it off, they has also left two £10 meal vouchers for evening meal and breakfast.
Think I could get used to this night out lark - ha ha!
How dare they do this. It’s the rule you’re meant to pay £30 out of your own pocket to sit in a narrow parking lane sweating your balls off in a box with the only showers being a pube ridden communal effort.
Don’t tell me, your Mum is Beverly Bell or something . Have you noticed anything else. Hampers being left for you by your car when you finish work?
Now that’s a firm to work for, a hotel and a meal voucher. Rightly so really as sounds like bad planning to begin with. Can’t assume no traffic holdups on distance work.
Sounds like a good firm to work for mate.
However usually if there is a sleeper cab provided you are expected to carry some kit ‘‘just in case’’
At this point when this is mentioned the… ‘‘Sleeping in a tin box/I like my own bed’’ crew , go wide eyed, show symptoms of a seizure, then sniff and pour scorn on those low life who sleep in a truck as a matter of routine.
But good to see a firm that actually look after their drivers anyway.
We have put drivers up in a cheap hotel with food for unplanned nights out. But yet our company is one of the worst logistics business going according to most on here.

Tbh if they had asked or even mentioned about a night out I’d probably have done it anyway. For me personnally I do like to be ‘belt and braces’ so putting in some sleeping gear and an overnight bag wouldn’t have been too much of an issue - as long as I’m organized I’ll happily plod on regardless. The strangest thing though it’s a Daf CF WITH a sleeper cab - and quite tidy too!
Did you have a sleeper cab, if yes then you were very well looked after if not that is the least you would expect, what they did was look after you and make sure you had what you needed without it costing you anything and they should be commended for that.
Enjoy.

That’s the difference, the conditions that they ask and/or expect you to sleep in.
I’m a brainwashed tramper , so nights out aren’t an issue to me, but if I was a dayman and an unplanned night out came up, there is no way in hell that I would sleep in a cab that was anything less than spotless.
A firm that puts you up in a hotel, and voluntary, is well worth sticking with mate.

Who’s that then?
A yellow company that is often the first to get slated on here. Namely DHL.

They don’t buy sleeper cabs for the just in case scenario, they buy them for the resale value.

Day driver, no night out kit required.
Is that right?..Where did I say that they did?
The point I was making was that the facility is there if a scenario occurs where a night out unexpectedly and uncontrollably comes up
Transport can never plan or account for unforseens.
Imagine being stuck in snow for instance 4 hours away from home, a more sensible switched on driver would take kit, a less prudent one, who did not, will have a less comfortable night.
That was my point.
Believe it or not I did suss out for myself the point that you made …but thanks anyway.
So what you’re saying is that I should carry an overnight bag and a sleeping bag, put it in the different truck I get allocated everyday, just in case ■■
How the hell do you fit all that in a Lidl bag for life?
Here are two events that happened to me…
Boss rang me after analysing old tacho charts moaning that I did 11 hours driving. I told him he gave me 11 hours work and I’m conscientious.
Next time it happened I pulled the card, he obviously didn’t like the first way [emoji38]
There was a company, in this manor who paid for drivers to have nights out in premier inns, travel lodge Tec and still paid nights out money, the company policy was
Drivers are our ambassadors, and need to be treated as such, clean and presentable.
Company was sold, transport subbed out, drivers made redundant, same old story, the accountants took over.
