First assessment drive

I have my first ever assessment drive on friday. Do I use my tachograph card for this? And also when I do my walk around check do i turn on the ignition and leave the engine running. I’ve not been in a truck since February so I’m a bit nervous about this.

Hello, well done on getting your first assessment drive. You would use your tachograph card, yes. If you are a new driver, the assessor should be able to help you make your manual entry.

When you do your walk around check I wouldn’t leave the engine running, no.

Take your time over everything and when coupling the trailer, be sure to take 2 tugs once you hear the kingpin click.

The reverse will be the trickiest part if you are completely new. Again, take your time and try to get the setup right using as much space as possible to get the trailer lined up towards the bay you’re heading to.

Use the day as paid practice and try not to get too nervous. It isn’t as strict as the driving test, and even if your reversing is not up to scratch, show a positive attitude with a willingness to learn and they may look favourably upon you.

Good luck with it and let us know how it goes!

It’s a long time since I did any assessment drive…a very long time.

But the above post seems like good advice.

Don’t treat it as a “once in a lifetime” chance and wind yourself up too much.
Don’t be afraid to ask the assessor questions.
They will be aware you are new, and since they are giving you a trial, they should not be expecting a fully formed driver ready to take an oversized load to Tehran tonight.

Keep cool, and in all aspects of driving try to be smooth rather than quick.

Do keep calm, an

Thanks for the replies. Its appreciated.

Flat to the mat :+1: Have no fear and you’ll pass.
