i coverd the firefighter strikes in liverpool in the 90 s and we were in the green goddeesses!!! We had sufficient training to put fires out but we also had 1 full time raf fire fighter with the capability to use breathing apparatus in extreme emergencies.

Why, exactly, are they striking ?
well all hgv drivers may as well go on strike the, 80 hour weeks 4-5 nights out for 7 quid an hour give me a fireman job or past service instead, point is in this day and age i can choose what i want to do, if you dont want to be a fireman do something else, that was the job you applied for so you should have told them what pay and hours you wanted at the interview
Rog, the firefighters in Yorkshire are striking due to a proposed change in their shift pattern hours. At the moment the shift is 2 days of 9 hours and 2 nights of 15 hours then 4 off.
The senior managers want to change that to 4 shifts,2 days and nights, of 12 hours each.
Apparently the FF`s have also been served,en mass ,with a notice of dismissal!!
Here is a link from Sky… news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-New … rchresults
In Essex there are rumblings of strike action but this is due to a dispute concerning the manning levels of particular appliances.

As already stated earlier on in the thread…in the event of a major incident or a “persons reported” call then they would go and do what they are paid and trained to do!!!
Do try and keep up old chap!!!

I Wouldn’t bother rising up to chunktransports comments, obviously he’s one of the know all’s who would be happy to stab his workmates in the back for that 2p per hr rise
I was on a green goddess during the firemans strike over the winter of 1977/78 in Londonderry - the only problem we had with them (apart from getting shot at) was organising who was going to ring the bloody bell. If you have never seen half a dozen squaddies fighting in the back of a moving green goddess about who is “duty bell-ringer” you havent lived!!
When they gave us sirens and blue lights it got even worse!!

I seem to remember that we discussed this sort of stupid shift pattern recently on here.
Why don’t they do it simple - 4 days on, 4 off then 4 nights on, 4 off - each shift being 12 hours
