I got fined 90 euros for being 20 cm over the width for a cat 1 wide load in France, the Gendarme measured it and then escorted me to the delivery point 2 kilometres further on, because as it was over width for a Cat 1, it needed an ■■■■■■ for a cat 2, then he wrote the ticket for 90 euro and asked for my licence and passport, oops, because I live in France, I had popped home for a cuddle that night and when I left in the morning, I forgot my bag with the Licence , Passport, docs etc, and I told the Gendarme that I had left it in the hotel I stayed in last night, luckily he let me off with a lot of finger wagging and let me continue. Sometimes it is not the done thing to tell them you live in France, that brings a whole lot of other things in to play, as I am sure the other guys on here that live in France will be able to tell you, so, sometimes I still play the stupid brit, and get away with it. (sometimes)

Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys !
none, YET.
been going away since 95 ish and am in no doubt i’ve been fortunate.
been stopped plenty of times, mainly france and spain, but tachos and paperwork were all in order.
going to more places further east from now on, so expect a fine in the future, either legit, or slightly vague.
Only ever had to pay out once.
Running down to Valencia from barcelona I was using the national to kill some time. Came across the traditional overloaded pegaso and nipped around him on a straight with good visibility. I knew it was no overtaking but I’d had a good look around and we were the only two vehicles around that I could see. I’d got a good couple of Ks down the road before the Guardia Civil pulled me. We went through all the usual drill with authorisation, CMR and discs before he mentioned the overtake. The amount mentioned was 2000 pesetas. Now I’d always been in the habit of making sure I only had a token amount I the wallet at anytime I got pulled and duly offered the 1000 pesetas I had. Unfortunately they still had my passport and CMR in there possession and having refused my generous offer they asked if I had a cashpoint card. I confessed I had at which point they sad that they were away for lunch, still with my passport and CMR and that a colleague would return with my papers to ■■■■■■ me to a cash machine. I sat there for two hours waiting and the annoying thing was I had the money in the cab. Still cost me the full 2000 pesetas and I solved my time killing as well.
Maybe I’ve just been lucky because I’ve had a few ring twitching moments when I’ve been sure I’m parting with cash. When they’ve got a couple of supposed offences on the table you feel as if they’re just trying to decide which one to hit you with.
My time in Europe finished over 10 years ago now and although I only ever got hit the once i was at least doing it when the fines were reasonable. I’ve got mates who’ve been hit with mega bucks fines recently for things which can only be described as petty in the extreme. Although I’d love to go back over the water I wouldn’t fancy sweating on the big fines being handed out these days.
Cheers

I’ve been mulling this over after my first post on this topic and off & on I’ve been doing Europe for 20ish years (still going strong) and in that time I’ve had the expensive carton of ■■■■ at la jounqera (11t limit in an artic) and I can’t think of any other fines in that time…
A work mate just got fined €28 in Hungary , for parking in the wrong place in a services. He couldn’t pay the cop, had to be paid at a bank.
