I had a security chap jump on my feet in the COOP near ilkeston(I think) a couple of years ago, when I was working for a Dutch firm, he thought I didn’t have steel toe caps on, he didn’t think to ask me, BIG mistake, one hard punch he was on his arse, to cut a long story short the ■■■ hit the fan, managers called Police called, in the end he was made to appologise to ME!!!
Never been back since tho!!!
I had boots ages ago which just looked like hiking boots really comfy didnt look like steelies but they were.
A security guard said i could jump on your toes to test them, i said i could kick you in the balls to test them. Just laughed and was let in.

having been on the other side of things I can understand why drivers get treated the way they do, not all but some treat the security guys like scum of the earth, the comment
Yeah i agree, there is some right idiots driving trucks, saw one the other night in our depot came in shouting the odd’s then decided to try and drop a trailer in the middle of the yard because he had to wait 10mins for a bay. Then decided to park so no one could get past.
But he isnt me, i don’t expect to be treated like crap because someone else had a problem.
I take people as i find them, maybe i’m lucky but about 90% of SG i meet are decent, chatty and like to have a laugh and joke, and are as helpfully as they can be. I know it must be at times a hard job sitting in a hut on your own for 12 hour shifts.
But its like everything else, no one is going to post about their experience of SG’s being decent and nice, they are going to post about the occasions they are met the idiots.
if the guard is polite, then the driver will reciprocate in a similar manner 9 times out of 10, but some are just plain rude, with huge chips, some are illiterate and some are stupid.
The guard is there to log movements in and out, check seals or check empty trailers in or out, to suit his job description, he is not there to be judge jury and executioner because a driver has been held up in traffic for 30 minutes.
One of the security guards at Ford at Daventry made me laugh - "Ive checked in your trailer havent I " yep you did
There are good ones of course. Remember one in particular when Safeway was at Bristol. He had to get random signatures to say he’d looked in the cab. Took a while before someone realised there were a few Disney characters working there. Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse etc. pmsl.
When any driver comes to our place i hope i’m remenbered as being a helpful shunter instead of the oppposite.

The latest fad with Security guards is on way out of somewhere-
SG- Need to look in the back driver,
ME- OK its unlocked
SG- We can’t open the back doors
ME- Yes you can, its really easy
SG- But we are not aloud
ME- Why■■? (even Stevie Wonder can see this one coming)
SG- Health and safety won’t allow it
ME- OK but if it’s unsafe for you then surely it’s unsafe for me to do it.
SG- No it’s different
ME- I assume you have a copy of the risk assesment that has been carried out?
SG- Not on me
ME- Go get it then and get the site H+S person then please.
SG- Off you go don’t matter this time, just sign this saying I have searched you.
ME- Will do thanks, bye.
You don’t want them opening your backdoors, seen it before at Tesco Livingston they checked in the back of a trailer and never shut it properly, guy flew off i was flashing him to try and stop but he drove off out the gate.

good and bad 100% totally agree!
tbh if someone had stepped on my toes I would have reacted.
prob witha lot of gatehouses is that they are stuck in the middle, depot management push alot of things on to the guys in the gate, warehouse guys moan about how many wagons ect you are letting in ect, drivers put their point of view across ect… if some thing goes wrong it will end up being the guy in the gates fault!
back to the original post though, it seems the driver had a me me me attitude he did,nt give a toss that he may be causing other people problems just as long as he was ok!
Guys, the original poster said that this was the first time he’d lost his rag in 20 years of driving. I would tend to belive that he was in the right to be angry… and give 'em some back…
point taken silver…
but i still cannot see why he lost his rag as he was the result of his own actions as such and possibly delayed other drivers,

“…so, I pulled up at his window, threw his gate pass at him, and in no uncertain terms told him how proud his family must be of him bringing home £150 a week for a mere 70 hours work…”
If you read the post properly, you will notice that a) I didnt forget to have a break, just failed to change the tacho mode to POA to enable me to have the break away from the premises and b) the gateman got it because he made a snidy derogatory comment to me first.
I respect any and all working men…and do not go about on a daily basis looking for confrontation…but manners and politeness cost nothing, and when (very rarely) I am afforded courtesy, I show it in return. I am not the type of bloke who thinks “I have a class one, I am better than everybody else”…I go to work, be as professional as possible and think I deserve the same in return. I honestly couldnt care less whether Morrisons in Lancashire have tins of coca cola on their shelves or not, but I am paid to deliver it as they have ordered it and want it…so why we get this constant abuse is beyond me!!!
Like someone has pointed out…jealousy! I could think of nothing worse than working at an RDC…but like most HGV drivers, I saved up, got off my arse and did something about it so I didnt have to.

I delayed nobody, the shunter was delayed by the Morrisons truck in front of him who in turn was delayed by the amount of other Morrisons trucks waiting at the gatehouse because the gateman had decided to go make a cup of tea and leave a young girl to cope with both inbound and outbound trucks. The reason the shunter was ■■■■■■ was that I didnt let the truck blocking him in out of a clearly marked give way sign, which even if I had of he would of blocked the whole yard off. Its hard to describe unless you know the place, which you obviously dont!
true I don,t know the place but you say you were peeved because you were asked to move your truck but you wanted to finish your break even though you state yard was busy, but then chose to slag the security guy off because he wanted his break,
perhaps the security guy had not had a cuppa since his shift started maybe hours could be minutes but end of the day everyone deserves/earns a break.
but also heaps of inbounds maybe these were being dalayed coming in as no parking places? you say yard was very busy,
One way of assessing the attitude of staff is to look out for the sign that says, “We will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse of their staff”
Dartford crossing has these signs and also one of my local bus companies. Sadly they employ staff who provoke confrontation then blame us for it.
I normally walk away, at the same time having a laugh.
Always remember this; Without the idiots in this world we wouldn’t be superior.
Truckers could print off 1 of those signs and hold it up to the a…holes that they encounter on their travels.
You KNOW youre in for a rough time when you see those “we dont tollerate abuse” signs. Makes you think though, if you go somewhere and they dont have one of those signs, can you give the SG or forkie a smack and get away with it?
Ive been to plenty of places and met some really horrible types of people, to be fair usually they are great with you, but you do find many “characters” in this line of work. I find the best course of action is to be as nice and polite as possible, these people really want you to lose your rag so they can report you and get you banned from site. It makes them look ridiculous when they start dishing out all the attitude and it just like water off a ducks back. Remember, its them with the problem, not you! Its all pretty pathetic, when you think about it.
I have had a jobsworth refuse me entry to 1 place because I couldnt provide a trailer number,
Hard to provide when your in a rigid
