Filton airport Bristol

It has been shut down for a while and i have noticed that Concorde and has gone, where did it go to ?
The runway is decomisioned with piles of dirt on the runway , and there are a few small business units on the side but the whole site would make an ideal truckstop, maybe the owners of Avonmouth truckstop could start the ball rolling, the amount of land there doing nothing is a waste .
How become the land has not been snapped up by house builders ?

Because they’re building a ruddy great link road around there some where

The link road is finished now, it bypasses the Western side of Bristol and i use it all the time to avoid the jams in the city .
Ignore the 7 .5 ton weight limit for the airport direction as the council have forgot to remove these signs, if going North, you head off towards Avonmouth , but go straight on to the new link road and end up on the A370 , to be under the Clifton suspension bridge then head to the M5 from there .

As to Concorde, I seem to remember it got towed to a hangar on the other side of the airfield a couple of months ago and will eventually become the centrepiece of the new Bristol Aerospace Museum there, when they have raised enough cash.

Yes Concorde has moved indoors to eventually become a tourist attraction

Filton runway was one of the longest in the country and would have made a good international airport as opposed to the landing strip that Bristol has now. There is a rail line into the site and the motorway junction just up the road. The use of the site as an airfield goes back to 1912 so all the nearby residents living nearby moved in knowing
that was always a possibility. The runway was built for the Brabazon which was the largest plane at the time and I think it is over twelve feet thick so it is going to take some removing to build houses on the site.
Sadly I am old enough to have been at Filton and watch the Brabazon take off.

It would be a great site for an international airport, but our polititions all have their heads up their backsides and are unable to make logical decisions with a bit of forward thinking.

Same with Manston, longest Runway in Europe, surrounded by fields.

Nope - let’s chuck more traffic at Heathrow that is already over developed and make life even more difficult for everyone :imp:

I agree that Manston itself is ideal for an international airport, but the infrastructure just isn’t there. Half of the M2 is a 2 lane motorway, as is the entire A299. Plus the railways aren’t good enough past Ebbsfleet. The reason Heathrow got the nod was because believe it or not, its in the best position. The motorway is already 12 lanes wide at Terminal 5, plus the rail infrastructure is already in. I agree traffic will be increased, but they need to look a options around getting passengers in and out by rail more easily and cheaper. Discourage passengers from the road is the answer

I remember traffic lights on the A38 to stop traffic, and watching Concorde landing right in front of me…
not too sure what year, but it would have been after 1977 ,when I started driving class 1
what a great memory.

I’ve stood by that same fence watching it take off away from me and you can feel the power and pressure on your chest, one hell of an experience, and as Luke said Concorde now inside as it couldn’t stay out indefinitely. In time the airport will be a housing estate.

NOT the longest runway

hbm2015.com/not-the-longest-runway-html/
also filton is shorter

RAF Lyneham near Swindon now shut as an active airport.
Once again acres of empty wasted space that could fill a thousand trucks.
The old air base would have made a perfect local airport halfway between the population areas of the south west and LHR , and LGW.

It’s also miles from the nearest city and that city already has four big international airports. All the big towns in Kent are near enough to Gatwick to make Manston redundant, especially as it doesn’t have decent rail links to anywhere.

I could never figure out how the new one (Ludsgate??) got the nod over Filton to become Bristol Airport.

It’s on a remotely located, cloudy hilltop that is expensive and slow to get out to whereas Filton was a class act in town with all the convenience.

Quite a mistake I think.

The NIMBY card trumps all others?
