Fifth wheel greaser

Q. How often should a fifth wheel be greased if the unit doesnt have a greaser fitted
Q/b Has anyone ever experienced the effects of not greasing it

most firms i have worked for grease them when they go in for service well the people who service them grease them.whats your companys service intervals its normaly about six weeks where i have worked

I don’t know if there is a definitive answer to this. I ask the fitters to grease it as soon as I can see some bare metal.

As for the consequences, I don’t know.

So i take it an automatic greaser isn’t that common on uk trucks

I’ve never seen one myself. In my experience (and as others have said) it tends to get greased up during the 6 weekly inspection.

I have, they were about when those Auto Lube jobs were about. Little grease lines running everywhere.

The only effects I’ve seen of not greasing it is rust. Most fitters over grease the ■■■■ things.

wow, i reckon our trucks get serviced every 3 or 4 MONTHS

The effects I’ve come across when driving with a dry fifth wheel were only apparent when loaded. The friction was enough to make steering in a straight line difficult,as every time a correction was made, the angle of articulation always went over the straight ahead position so in effect, the truck was always in the position of starting to turn one way or the other.
When empty, the friction was much reduced so the problem was not as obvious.

we run with nylon pads on our fifth wheels so we dont have to grease em much cleaner way of doing it

they were also only available on new trucks up to euro 3

Keep them greased or the tail will always wag the dog.

auto greasers are used but never checked so when the pipe cracks the plate is left dry. It is easier just to spread the grease with a stick

Looks like i’'ll have to grease up every month then. Bit of a pain see’in as i never unhitch. If it irk’s me too much i’ll just get a greaser on next service.
At least i know not havin it aint un heard of. Thanks lads.

Those of us that did M/E work, when doing a round trip of 8,000 plus miles, and the dry, sandy conditions, had to drop the trailer and grease the fifth wheel a couple of times during the trip.
