Ferry/train mode .. Again!

I am getting ■■■■■■ off with a driver where I work … Every time I double man with him he has this annoying habit of switching the tacho over the the fabled “ferry/train mode”

After explaining to him a million times it is not neccasary and also forbidden when using Calais/Dover … Folkestone/Coquilles … because of the cabin /couchette rules .He insists that a Driver trainer told him that is what you should do because it distinguishes where you can do 60mph in the UK and 90kmh in France. Please bear in mind that an overspeed to him is a black mark on his impecable driving career, But he just won’t have it !

I just hope when they re write the rules they include when you should use the fables “ferry/mode” in simpletons language!!

All the ferry/Train option does is mark the driver record so that it can be seen that a journey on a ferry or train took place, if you don’t have access to a bunk or couchette you can’t take advantage of the interrupted daily rest concession, but as long as you are actually on a ferry or train there’s nothing in the regulations that forbids the use of the ferry/train option.

If it keeps him happy I’d just let him get on with it to be honest.

As its not illegal to keep making the ferry mark then why not keep doing it yourself as well to make his marks a nonsense :bulb:

It’s not illegal to use the ferry option as long as you’re actually on a ferry or train.

I think you may have some awkward questions to answer if you was found to be driving down the M1 with your tachograph on ferry/train though

How could you be driving down the M1 with your tacho on ferry/train?
It isn’t a mode, it’s a flag.

I thought it was in as close to simpletons language as they can write it, without it being so simplified that no-one can make head nor tail of it.

EU Drivers Hours…:
Journeys involving ferry or train transport
Where a driver accompanies a vehicle that is being transported by ferry or train, the daily rest requirements are more flexible.
A regular daily rest period may be interrupted no more than twice, but the total interruption must not exceed 1 hour in total. This allows for a vehicle to be driven on to a ferry and off again at the end of the crossing. Where the rest period is interrupted in this way, the total accumulated rest period must still be 11 hours. A bunk or couchette must be available during the rest period.

How could it be made clearer?
Where does the difficulty of understanding lie?

Very easily, you select ferry from the tachograph options and start driving.

OK then

Lol, it wouldn’t be on that boat mode long driving down the motorway as it trips off as soon as you start moving. :unamused: :unamused:

got to admit I use it when i go Dover Calais or by the tunnel and it has helped me in a tight spot with French transport inspectors I am sure it will open debate of when to put it on ferry mode. In this instance got to tunnel having done 4hours 10 minutes driving with a 15 minute break got to the queue for the tunnel and put it on ferry mode by the time I got on the train taco showed 4 hours 49mins recorded it in my book. Was pulled a week later and asked about going over my time good memory prompt was the ferry mode stamp on the tacho paper goes through it with them and away I went.

If using ferry mode make sure its on right one i know someone who has just been fined £750 for putting it on out of scope by mistake

Correct me if I’m wrong.
Should “ferry mode” NOT be used if the journey is less than 3Hrs regardless of whether a bunk or couchet is available.
I was asleep during that part of the Dcpc

There is no mention of 3 hours in the vosa drivers hours etc handbook, in connection with a ferry/train movement.

I stay clear of this type of question but ferry mode as far as I know is when your moving on or off a ferry when you may interrupt a rest or break but as I don’t do I don’t use

as Simon said, no mention of the minimum time in the law. it takes two hours for a ferry to cross the bay of finland from tallinn to helsinki, and you get a cabin, access to the sauna and a full buffet meal with the regular folk, why shouldn’t it be a part of a daily rest

I have even used it on the small road ferry’s in Norway, since you are allowed to stay in the cab I have no problem seeing it as a rest. Easy way to get to drive 11h day and not needing to care about the 15h rule. Shortest ferry been has been 10min. But I have saved the recipe so I got any proof in case of inspection.
