Ferry crossing Portsmouth or Plymouth

'Er indoors fancies camping in Brittany in August, and rather than drive from Calais,I said it would be easier to go to either Portsmouth/St.Malo or Plymouth/ Roscoff.

The best price I’ve got so far,is via the camp site company, and that’s £220 return.Trying it independently,it would cost up to £550.

Any advice on either of the above crossings, including prices, tips, and any discounts, would be grateful.

Ken.

St. Malo is a decent crossing, I don’t know how it works for cars but you get great free food and a cabin when you take the truck. It’s worth getting a cabin because the crossing is 5 1/2 hours if my memory serves me right (it’s been a long time since I have been that way.)
Tell the mrs that the shopping is pretty good when you dock!

I’ve sailed Portsmouth to St Malo and also to Caen with Britanny Ferries.

Both are decent crossings but a cabin is worth getting as they are long crossings.

The boats must be getting slower - St Malo-Portsmouth took 8hrs last time I went!

Aye but Ken tell her it’s better Dover Calais vie Speed Ferries, book well in advance and its only summit like £65 return ?, The savings made using them outweighs any savings going from Ports on the south coast in my opinion, plus you get to see more of the French Countryside Lol.

Portsmouth - St Malo tend to be about 8 hours, and Plymouth - Roscoff, normally 6 in the daytime, but last year they put a new boat on the run and it was less than 5 hours.

A lot depends on the ferry times. Portsmouth can be a bit ‘iffy’ with traffic on a pre 0900 sailing, whereas Plymouth tends to be more predictable.

I would always recommend Roscoff - Plymouth for the return. Plenty of time to pack up and arrive for an afternoon sailing, and the best Wine Warehouse I have found is called “Red Hut” and is alongside the main road about 2 miles out of Roscoff. Good, friendly service.

Also the roads below Roscoff have been greatly improved over recent years with a new section having opened only last year.

done plymouth/roscoff and would highly recommend it,good cabins ,decent snap, and roscoff is a nice place to spend a couple of hours in.

The ‘down’ side of that is the journey from Calais to Rennes is over 300 miles and nearly six hours. Add that to the journey time to Dover from Yorkshire, and it becomes a damned long day with little rest. Whilst there might be a small saving after calculating fuel costs, wear and tear costs, once added in, will probably show little, if any, savings.

The St Malo crossing is 11 hours if it calls at the Channel Islands. 8 hours if sailing direct.

Poole Cherbourg, Portsmouth Caen or Portsmouth St Malo with Brittany is all good.

Normally some good deals to be had in magazines. We get loads of offers for bikes sent to us
