Ferrero (DHL) Langley Mill

anyone on here work,or worked there? i hear the Operation is moving back to Crick/DIRFT in July, and a couple of our guy’s looking at a possible transfer.

Crick has never closed, it still does a co pack operation and extra storage space, they have also continued to load some loads out of Crick ever since it was moved to Langley Mill. They got rid of all the trucks at Crick when it was moved to LM.

Cannot see what they would gain moving Ferrero back as there wasn’t enough room there for Ferrero let alone Thornton’s on top. Unless they were having a new purpose built unit. I have not heard anything from people I know that still work there.

I would also add they do ramp up and down with staff for the co-pack operation and loading vehicles from there in busy periods.

cheers simcor…but heard it from one of their guys at a DCPC course.

This gaff was for Thorntons originally so they could free up space at the factory & turn the storage space into production space, I`m not sure what the volumes are like nowadays, but DHL seemed to think it would be filled without too much trouble from Thorntons when it opened

Obviously after they were took over, the Italians had other ideas :unamused:

They did move from Thornton’s to LM to free up the warehouse space for other uses. None of which materialised. Crick was already a Ferrero operation. LM was actually too big and spent most of its time half empty, they kept storing pallets for other contracts like haribo at the time. Then it was decided to close the transport side of Crick and move it to LM after Ferrero had bought Thornton’s. And just keep a small co-pack operation at crick. And soon enough with both it was often full to the rafters, so we trunked stock back and forth to Crick again and some loads went out on subbies only at Crick. But no trucks based there again.

I spoke to someone from there last night and he didn’t seem to know anything about it.

TBH, I thought they were being a tad optimistic with the volumes, but this was in the day`s of a certain DHL manager who wreaked havoc wherever he went :unamused:

Which one? There were quite a number over the years of Transport managers at Thornton’s and LM. And most of them made a hash of it in one way or another. Think we lost count at something like 14 transport managers in the space of around 5 years lol

And TBF thorntons had been over producing stock for many years and storing it for too long, Ferrero cut down the volume of stock production a lot, and yet stuff was still being collected like Easter eggs with decent date on them and sent to blast freeze at Scunny for next year.

Assuming you mean the place on the island of Danes Way, between my place (Tesco Frozen) and Optima just up from the Ibis?

From driving past there are DHL units in there now that I’ve not seen (or not noticed anyway) previously.

Whether they are based there or not I do not know. But DHL units from LM do go in and out of there and have done ever since it was all mostly moved to LM.

I see, so it looks like they have put some units back in at Crick then.

The guy I`m on about was the Ops Manager IIRC, he went upto another contract @ J28 to get him out of the way, and then went altogether after yet another poor performance, this was after he caused a lot of problems at a well known brewer not too far down the A38

I know where he is now, but he is on a very tight leash apparently :unamused:

I do a bit of DHL stuff on and off and got talking to a driver from there about a month ago. He seemed to think Great Bear were taking over the operation. Not heard anything about that since.

I went in there not long after and the staff in the traffic office were all talking about signing on. None of them seemed interested in being TUPE’d over if GB are taking over.

It looks like from what I’ve now been told, the contract was up for renewal and DHL has been awarded the transport side but not the warehousing this time. And it’s not staying at Langley Mill.

It seems Great beat (aka Culina) has won the warehousing contract and it will be moving to Desbourough.

I think most of the drivers will likely go to East Midlands on the KP contract though. So guess they are looking for new drivers for crick in the meantime as a stop gap whilst the rest of the warehousing deal is completed maybe, unless they keep crick as a satalite depot because of the co-pack operation.

Desborough was home to their Mars contract that has migrated over to DHL @ EM Gateway & London Gateway, along with the Markham Vale set up at some stage in the future apparently, thats some space to fill, so Id imagine some favourable quotes going in to keep them full

It’s like a game of revolving circles. Same with them taking Haribo from DHL previously before the great buy out. And they also won another contract off DHL around the same sort of time, as they took a load of the gaviscon and various other advertising CNBF trailers on from Bawtry at the time.

And July seems to be the month most of the changes will start to happen or need to be completed by whichever is the case.

Don’t say that round these parts. The residents of Crick will be most displeased with being merged with DIRFT despite the width of a motorway being the divide
