I am. Here’s me, dodgy knees, bad back, and I managed to climb up AND down into one of the new Volvos on Tuesday (It would be a struggle doing it a few times a day). I got invited to the showcasing of the new Volvos, (tea and sarnies ) and there was this 3 axle thing, it said 750 on the badge, all polished wheels and looking splendid, “I’ll show these young fellas” thinks I, and then some cheeky bugga (my lad) shouts out “CAN YOU MANAGE OLD LAD”
Very nice and comfortable up there, a hell of a lot different from when us old fellas were tramping the highways and byways.
The thing was plated for 60 ton (so i was told) and bye 'ell, you can see it in the engineering in the chassis.
One design fault, there were a lot of expensive items mounted behind the PLASTIC front grille (many fans for the air con, radar box for the cruise control ) only needs a bit of a bump on the grille and it’s big bucks time.
I spent my working life in artic units but that’s the first time I’ve been in one in the last 10 years.
Would I go back?? No. They’re all nice when they are new and it couldn’t bring the old HAPPY days back.
congratulations brian , i think i could still get into one as well , but what the hell do you do with all those buttons and switches and that silly little thing where the gearstick used to be ? i think we had better leave them to the younger generation while we remember what it was like to drive a proper lorry , cheers , dave
We’ve been left behind mate. It was neat and tidy, not too many switches and buttons. The cab was on coil spring that wouldn’t have looked out of place on my car (and it’s a heavy car)
I don’t understand how it can have 2 pedals, box can be used in auto. or manual (sequential) mode but still it says it’s got a double clutch. There must be some sort of a torque convertor somewhere. They’re too technical now for us old uns.
Show a Scammell gate change to some of the young superstars today and they would wet themselves.
Hi, Grumpy
I agree with you on these new trucks, it’s pretty much when you’ve been in one you’ve been in 'em all. No character very antiseptic. And I’m speaking as one who’s just come off the road. you’re right about the majority of the younger ones, they wouldn’t take what we had years ago,out on the road, and to be fair I wouldn’t want to do today’s work with a 150 Gardner engined Atkinson, but I have in the dim and distant past ,used a Scammell gearbox, and like an I-Shift box, they could be bloody awkward at times!
Cheers Bassman
