Favourite ferry

What was, or is your favourite ferry?
I used to really like Olau lines Sheerness to Vlissengen. Good cabins, cinema and night club, more like a mini cruise than a ferry. The best thing was no queuing on the the stairs for customs like Dover!

The freight only ships of Brittany Ferries, down to earth, no dumb tourists and kids running around the decks all night.
Steak Blue was raw steak cooked quickly with blood inside.
The ship had the married quarters on the top deck , it was a Portakabin secured down with chains.
The Duc de Normandie that would make you sea sick on a flat sea crossing.
The Stena line love boat from Southampton to Cherbourg.

Its got to be the Tallink silja line ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki its about an 18hr crossing with absolutely every thing you would want on board the food in the drivers lounge is like eating at the hilton spot on.

Friday night Sally Line, Dunkirk back into Ramsgate was a good one.

Got on at Tahiti, calling at Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora

The notes when I booked it said “Please, note that this boat is a cargo boat and do not offer great comfort and service !!!”

It was sort of true, but no worse that the p&o dover calais freight boat & having a cold beer with some locals on the rear deck, having just watched some goats getting loaded & chugging past pretty much the most spectacular views I’ve ever seen, was worth it.

superfast ancona/patras 20hrs sit by pool on deck few beers and of to disco in evening . the ol freighters outta pool we used to call the married wooden boxes on deck the penthouse suite lol gr8 days

I’m with you there Steve. In fact all those Ancona-Patras boats were pleasant. Another of my favourites was the Portsmouth-Bilbao with a shed load of Manno, DTS and Breda drivers - but my god Monday morning used to be hard work with the prospect of a ten-hour shift down to Santa Lucia truck stop! Robert

ha ha ye robert stood at that bar on bilbao boat usually us morrocco bunch were easily spotted the famous line of oh yes we just have a few not to many because we gotta roll on monday yes right dont think i ever got of that boat without a bleary eye .another gd one was southampton cherbourg stena line gr8 crack

I was gonna say Alan Carr

I always liked the Normandie shipper ,Portsmouth-Caen with top deck hazardous. Never any rush, but absolutely detested the Gabi Weir, which probably is spelt incorrectly, which was a tatty freighter from Portsmouth - Le Havre.Somebody will have loved it,but not me.The Cherbourg -Southampton was lovely,as was anything to Scandinavia.Bilbao and Santander both had nice ships .
Marseille - Corsica - Sardinia was ok too.

Remember the Gabriel Weir well, the duty free shop was the broom cupboard .

One of my first trips was out of Dover Western dock, on the old train ferry you had to reverse on. was always impressed by the Dutch guys backing on with their wagon and drags.

and the Thomas Wier was glad to see the back of them

Stena, Superfast and Brittany are my favourite companies. Pont Aven back from Spain is always a pleasure, as is Mont St Michel Caen - Portsmouth and I’ve a big soft spot for the old lady of the Irish Sea, the Stena Europe

Iam more into the quality of dining and accommodation ,Ancona to igumanitsa nice food good bed ,Immingham to Gothenburg not really for me however Aberdeen to Lerwick great food and a good bed ,Portsmouth to Jersey not that good ,and wasn’t keen on the Bilbao boat too many stinking kids running riot .

other end of scale schiaffino way back ramsgate/oostende only 12 accompanied trucks and if u had any adr load that other lines wouldnt touch they would .u would be put on lift top deck stuck in corner and surrounded with unaccompanied. the evening meal was 12 lots fish/chips that crew member biked over from chip/shop just b4 sailing oh what days

I always thought the Hull-Rotterdam was pretty civilised too! Robert

also the hook to harwich stens but not long enough

The Colourline Denmark-Kristiansand Norway is a nice ride.
