As you say it’s the same procedure as a faulty card, one vehicle printout at the start of the shift and another vehicle printout at the end of the shift, write on the printouts the drivers name or card/licence number and the drivers signature.
You probably already know this but there is some information on page 41 here that maybe of help.
Breakdown of equipment
EU legislation requires that in the event of a breakdown or faulty operation of the equipment, it must be
repaired as soon as possible. If the vehicle is unable to return to its base within a week the repair must
be carried out en route…UK legislation also provides that a driver or operator will not be liable to be convicted if they can prove
to a court that the vehicle was on its way to a place where the recording equipment could be repaired,
or that it was not immediately practicable for the equipment to be repaired and the driver was keeping
a manual record. Additionally, they will not be liable where a seal is broken and the breaking of the seal
was unavoidable and it could not be immediately repaired, providing that all other aspects of the EU rules were being complied with. For faults and breakdowns involving digital tachographs, operators should ask the repair centre to download any data held on the unit. If this is not possible the centre should issue the operator with a ‘certificate of undownloadability’, which must be kept for at least 12 months.
thank you for that,if a card was put in driver 2 slot it wouldent record it as driving would it without a card in driver 1 slot??

No, slot 2 will only record POA when the vehicle is moving and POA or break/rest when the vehicle is stationary.
If you can’t get the card in slot 1 then as far as I know there’s no way to record driving so it has to be vehicle printouts I’m afraid
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to phone the tachograph centre and check, but I’m pretty certain there’s no way to use your card to record the driving in slot 2.
i thought so,thanks again

Or other work of course, whether moving or stationary.
