Fairground vehicles

When McMurdo were in business in Sanquhar every time the shows were in they used to come and get welding jobs etc done and some of them became good friends and used to buy any of the older motors especially Gardner powered. And over the years I never heard of a bit of bother with them all nice families. Eddie.

Tax free too. Like their transit vans.

Anyone for asphalt?

transit vans asphalt think you are getting the two mixed up surely you know the difference showman have to pay tax how do you think they purchase there rides and equipment tax would have to be paid as tax would be paid buy the seller,im not saying they pay proper tax all the time especially on takings(great weather good days takings) tax man gets told it was a wet day and takings were poor but nowadays even the tax man looks at the weather

I should imagine those showmen’s vehicles and rides are many thousands of pounds, not in the league of a chap with a rusty transit.

My dad worked on a travelling fair back in the early seventies, he said the rides were done up finger tight ( :open_mouth:  ) the theory being by the time things were working loose, it was time to pack up. Whether that is the case nowadays I don’t know.

Think you are getting them mixed up with …“Those that are not to be mentioned” on here bud,

These guys are business men not… Nah, won’t go there, couldn’t hack the hassle

That’ll be what I tried to say in Heiroglyphics and got told off for no doubt… :unamused:

Legal length for lorries and drawbars is 95 foot

Here is a video that was made in 97 for sky my mates and me star in it

Foden plus 3 trailers… 40mph “limit” and no HGV licence needed iirc. Quite something to watch these things being shifted about.

A showman nosing a bogie at Aberystwyth a few years ago. They are capable of pushing big trailers into tight places. These blokes are no mugs.

A couple of ex Ralph Davies have been brought by a showman once he has sprayed them up ect il post a pic

Who has bought them, do you know his name?

Love seeing the old Fodens and ERFs being kept going. Also see a fair amount of newer Volvos, DAFs & Scanias these days, seen this one about a few times, think it’s an impressive motor

I feel very sorry for them. Just what earthly use will a Euro six vehicle be to them in 10 years time?

Foden’s and Erf’s will never die my friend :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Hi Tango Boy. I used to drive an 8 legger Foden back in the 60s for Patsy Gray in Mitcham. Ive found the same truck, it is in Hereford in Prestine condition. The old Coronation Ak is in a museum in Toronto Canada. Im still trying to trace the old Scammel 6 legger tractor with no joy as yet.

Chris danter brought them

Which is a little ironic. I’m sure Ralph grew up on a travelling fair.

Sorry to off topic here slightly, I do have to agree with the majority of posters on here, even though a lot of Showmen use older bits of kit they are always well maintained and you hardly ever see one on the road bellowing out clouds of smoke, it’s a shame the same can’t be said for a large majority of Horse Boxes!!

That is a nice looking bit of kit, proper workhorse.
Good interesting thread.

Think that’s a Danters aswell that could possibly be at Hyde park aswell

Trukkertone:
they might as well get them set up and make some money while they’re waiting.

There would be plenty of trade from the Irish lads chasing the ferry  imagine the bods from VOSA, “Right drive, we are going to do you £200 for your hours offences, £1000 for having no CPC card. But hey ho never mind, you can ride the waltzes to your hearts content, stuff your face with burgers or candy floss or try and win a teddy bear on hook a duck!”

Anyone heard of Roger Tubys funfair? Well known around these parts. A good few year ago now they got drove off Farm Raod fields on the notorious Kendray estate in Barnsley after 3 of the fairground lads beat up a kid black and blue for taking the ■■■■ out of them. He went home to fetch his brother only to turn up with him and half of the estate who were carrying bits of timber, baseball bats and all sorts :open_mouth:
A full blown riot kicked off were the fruit machines were raided, stalls smashed up (some set on fire) rides smashed up and all sorts. The lads off the estate gave them a right going over. Old bill from all over the shop turned up with riot police, police helicopter the lot.
The old bill told the funfair to pack up shop and ride into the sunset never to be seen again for their own safety. Think about 20 folk got their collars felt and the fair hasn’t been back to Kendray since

Ralph grew up with Billy Danters family, he told me they taught him how to work
