saw 2 of these road trains pulled into vosa Carlisle early hours of this morning… both were artics plus burger van type trailers towed behind…
where do the vosa bods start with these ■■?
could be a long job.
Thought the same as I passed this morning as they sat in the naughty corner !
they might as well get them set up and make some money while they’re waiting.
always interested me how showmen got their special legal status. So many pieces of haulage legislation end with, “…except for showmen” Good luck to them. They always seem to have pretty motors.
they are just glorified people who you cant mention on tnet,
one comes in our place on weekends on the agency ,hes a good lad but allways covered in paint from touching up the waltzer and tackle hes got,i could sit all day listening to his stories ,very naughty fella but you cant help like him,hes tighter than a ducks arse aswell, you will never get a coffee off him and one of the lads took his nipper to the fair and he charged him full wack for the candyfloss
Place I used to work years ago, had an annual staff fun day, which I helped arrange, included having a small fun fair with selected rides for the kids, we did it every year.
Couple of years after I left there, one weekend I took the kids to the seaside for a couple of days, there was a funfair set up, had a stroll round and there was one of the operators there who used to set-up at his rides at the annual staff day - he had his two kiddie rides on the go - he recognised me and let my kids ride on both rides free as much as they wanted.
His wife ran the sweet / candy floss / tea van next to his rides, she gave them a huge bag of free pick n mix as well and kept topping up my free cuppa tea.
I know some Fun Fair / Showmen do get a bad rap - but he was top bloke!
Passed one earlier on the outskirts of Chichester today. ERF 6x2, dragging the non-drive axle - the wheels were simply not turning, but it wasn’t in the “lift” position. Smelt him a long way back - he left two miles of rubber behind him in nose to tail traffic. Eventually was able to pull into the layby just past the A259 roundabout. Must have the mother and father of all flat-spots. Still, there was a burger van in the layby…
Back in the good ole days of my ‘youf’ I used to do a bit of travelling with Bert Stocks fun fair from Suffolk and worked the skid, my favourite place for sitting was on a speaker box in the middle for obvious reasons to those of the first mini skirt era in the seventies. There were also two lads who were identical twins and quite often a ‘young lady’ was given a tour of our living accommodation, a dirty smelly bunk in the back of the wagon and after a short time whichever twin it was would ask to be excused for a min or two and leave and then the other would take his place …
Nice life and we got paid a £5 a week and our grub, for what it was (and as much as we could short change the punters)
The Showmans vehicles are much better these days, than they were a few years back. Most of the blokes driving them can handle a wagon and get them in some very tight places.

He mentioned giving out dodgy quid coins out in change when they were starting the rides off,im talking thousands in fake money
I feel very sorry for them. Just what earthly use will a Euro six vehicle be to them in 10 years time?

Foden’s and Erf’s will never die my friend
Check out “The Showmans Guild” they know all the problems & the answers they also stand up for their members interests unlike some trade associations!,do not confuse them with a certain type of nomadic person, many of them have a proud family tradition of fairground business going back many many years!(found this out when a mate married into a showland family)

Traditions like gluing prizes to the shelves, and passing off poundshop tat as prizes.

Grumpy!!!
I once met a fairground girl in the pub.
We got on so well that we ended up leaving together. We get back to her place, and I noticed that one wall of her bedroom was completely filled with teddy bears. There were three shelves in the bedroom, with teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall. There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the middle shelf, and huge bears along the top shelf. I thought this was a bit strange, but I didn’t say anything. We kissed, one thing led to another, and afterwards I said “So how was that for you?”
She said “Help yourself to any prize from the bottom shelf”

I read that from the beginning, I knew what the punchline was, I still kept reading and it still made me laugh. Nice one Harry.
Many moons ago i used to work at the fairground on the dodgems.I was in charge of taking the money from the punters and ensuring they entered and vacated the track safely.Anyway one night a group of teenagers were a bit worse for wear and some wandered onto the track while the dodgems were in motion.Off course the inevitable happened and a few kids ended up with broken bones. The parents came down and all hell broke loose, which culminated in me losing my job.
My protests of innocence were totally ignored, so i had no other option than to go to a employment tribunal.
I got them done for ’ Funfair Dismissal '.
I took my youngest to the fair on sunday, i got palmed off with the usual ‘hook a duck tat’
but i did see a mint ec14 dropbox.com/s/69m9o0kc4scq6 … .20.07.jpg
im sure its missing something ?
