Failed CE second time. This time right at the beginning - during reversing. Saying I’m not happy with myself is an understatement…
At some point the nerves took over and I knew I wouldn’t put the trailer right. Messed up the shunts as well.
I know I’ll finally get there but at the moment I’m so disappointed and discouraged that I don’t think I want to go through this again…
A friend of mine failed ce test 4 times. Eventually run out of money and now works on class2 tippers.
He had some attitude and didn’t want to drop his old driving habits though.
It all depends really, individual, instructor, examiner etc.
To be honest, driving during exam is your best ever driving performance. After you’ve passed exam, it only gets worse.
Believe me.
Cheer up, and be professional…all of us started at the same point.

It is worth remembering that the reverse is a bit of a game. As a suggestion maybe decide to use at least one shunt and have decided that in your mind before you even start. In your mind you will be taking control of the situation a bit more, including all the daft parameters to the silly reverse round cones game that it is. The pass certificate / licence doesn’t say how many shunts you took or how many minors you got!
Don’t be too hard on yourself either. Diving into this game and doing C+E fairly early on is a reasonably big ask and by implication you got through the most difficult part out on the road, which you don’t really seem too proud about.

If you’re taking the test in an artic, try wagon and drag. Many new drivers find the test easier in wagon and drag because the trailer just follows the rigid around the corners, whereas in an artic you have to take the corners wider. Also, make sure the lorry is an automatic…that again makes the test so much easier.

One of the Covid measures adopted by DVSA is to end the test as soon as a serious fault happens. With the reversing normally being done at the start of the test, the road drive often wont take place. If the fault occurs on the road, the shortest route is taken back to the test centre.
If you’re taking the test in an artic, try wagon and drag.
There’s some sense in this if the problem is with the road drive. But it really wont help for reversing. (Being pedantic, why would you encourage someone onto the road with an artic who cant actually pass a test on one?)
I know I’ll finally get there
And that demonstrates strength of character! All the best for next time.

Took one the night before. But I guess it should be taken for some time. I’m not a great fan of any meds, no matter if prescribed or over the counter.
The funny thing is that driving tests can be taken unlimited times and still they are nerve wracking… I can’t remember if any other exams (school, uni) were that stressful.
Even the car test (many years ago when I was young and not many things bothered me) was a big thing for me.
There are many factors not in my favour. One is while PSTT is a great company, Chris was a fantastic instructor, everything is perfect there - but the thought of having travelled such a long distance only to mess up the reverse that badly that the truck was left almost across the yellow lanes, is unbearable… And how many times will it happen again?

I find actually talking yourself through each step helps, when reversing talk yourself through what you are about to do and why, you will find it calms you down and makes you think what needs to be done rather than utter silence.
On the road look way ahead and talk yourself along an example, the bus stopped at the bus stop, I need to slow to allow the oncoming cars through, mirrors, signal in good time, last check of the mirrors I’m good to pass slowly, watching the offside front of the bus for feet and checking the nearside mirrors as I pass etc
Things like that can make you relax, it will come, you have the right attitude but made a couple of errors.
Good luck next time.
Dust your self down take the bull by the horns and don’t let it beat you dead duck.Good Luck for next time.

Very good advice.

Just been told that you’re staying in the area for a few days. I’ve authorised a couple of hours reversing FOC. Just call the office arrange. That way, you’ll go home with confidence that it’s well within reach.
Pete
Thanks Peter, yes I’m staying in Alfreton with my family and leaving Saturday morning so that would be perfect. I’ll ring the office tomorrow morning.
Thanks again!
I’ve let Tracey know that I’ll come in and look after the session if all the trainers are committed. The vehicle is available for some of the time so it will be possible to make it work.
Onwards and upwards!
Pete
I didn’t realise the on the road part wouldn’t have happened. You have been desperately unlucky with Covid putting a large gap in-between your tests as well, which surely hasn’t assisted you. Glad to see the forum sponsor is helping you out.
Sorry to hear you failed, nerves got the better of you is all, You will get everybody makes mistakes does something wrong but you want to dive in again shows you will get there.
Read some of the old threads on here when trying to figure out who to train with, and seeing that you took the trip from up near me (Aberdeen) along with the massive amounts of help and advice from Pete, then even with it being a fair old trip its worth it.
Good luck with the practice
I want to thank Peter for the time he spent with me, all his advice and encouragement he gave me yesterday. I had a chance to focus particularly on reversing. Peter explained to me not only how to do the exercise properly but most importantly how to get out of a difficult situation I may end up in which was great as I will definitely need a shunt or two as my chaotic steering is not getting me right in the bay.
I’m more confident now especially when I know what and when can go wrong also I know how to make the shunts count.
Now I need to find time to come down here which is not gonna be easy considering the distance and other commitments I have…
Thanks again, Peter, I really appreciate yo help.
You’re very welcome. Hope it’s not too long before you’re able to show the examiner you’ve got it sorted!
Take care, Pete

The very definition not going the extra mile!
I doubt I am alone in applauding this.
