Bet this brings back some memories , who remembers the early 290’s with the air operated wipers? & the Radiomobile MW LW radio, a lot of them had them awfull Hatcher fibreglass ‘catwalk’ fuel tanks fitted .

I don’t remember the 290 having air wipers, only the 240 and 330

The first 290’s did on N plates with the blue trim , then they updated them to electric wipers as well as some of the switchgear (‘twist’ heater controls ) in the later ones before they changed to the brown trim/matt black models - late P reg

Still have to disagree on that one, The company where I started had an L registration with electric wipers and Cadwalladers had one on an M plate

My old mans first 290 88 N reg - had air wipers

Hi all,
My understanding is this.all blue trim f88’s had air wipers.this model was then updated with the bubble type diesel tank, brown and black trim and electric wipers.maybe? The cad’s ones you refer to were caddie’s own specials, remember this is the haulier that had more spares than the nearest Volvo dealer.the dealer used to ring “richly” cad’s top fitter for advice and parts.
Regards Andrew.

Expect Volvo is like most manufacturers they fit ‘newer’ bits n bobs on the outgoing model , but i def remember my dads being air- cos as a 10 year old i was always [zb]in about with all the switches etc as you do  & if i remember rightly the more clockwise or anticlockwise  you turned the control the faster the wipers went?? Also the early 290’s had the complicated preheat start switches on the centre console - the brown/black trim models worked from the key

Ah the memories of it all when the passenger transport of the day was Ford 100E with vacuum wipers, the faster you went the slower the wipers did, unless they actually stopped like normal

Here she is looking a little better, taken about 1986 while building Bideford’s new bridge, so about 12 years old at the time.

The nearside fresh air vent is looking a little bust!!

When did they stop making the 240 ? I notice that in all the pic’s they ( 240’s ) have smaller diameter hubs- anyone know why ? I know the 290 was made esp for the uk market, were they assembled in scotland

And changed her grill and grew an extra axle :open_mouth:

It is a good plan, I think there is a bit of spring cleaning to be done with the new upgrade

During 1963 Volvo had a bonneted L 495 Titan Turbo as had an engine TD96 developing 230 HP as L 4951 Titan Tiptop also use. The next step was TD100 as was used in F88 and developed 260 HP. Any 240 Hg engine has never been developed.
Above is not valid for Britain only in Sweden and many other countries. The F88 engine (TD100) as were specially made for the British aisles but this engine was not so reliable as 230/250 HP engines.

Here an early (first generation) Volvo L4951 Titan as had its viper mounted above the windows and air driven.

Here another tough early Volvo F88. This truck is very beautiful and has its wipers above the windows.

The last photo is a BMP-file so you can copy and paste it and use it as a writing board. I couldn’t get the right name.
Both pictures is from Volvos Picture bank

A strikingly good looking truck in (what looks like) metalic paintwork, it has the appearance of a modern restoration rather than a ‘period’ shot but fantastic anyway, thanks for posting it.

It’s also got what looks like a pre-production adblue tank just in front of the drive axle;)
