On my old FM when it was cold it used to back fire and shoot flames and sparks out of the stack when you backed off the throttle.
I cured this by turning the exhauster off when the engine was cold or at the very least turning it down.

Yep so are you burgerking and you do a lot of backfiring aswell
I remember the old f10’s when the timing shims used to slip so the silencer used to fill with part up burnt fuel until it exploded. Sometimes they used to blow the silencers apart. Not heard of the problem of backfiring or explosions recently.
