Excessive play on the 5th wheel

Sometimes I pick a trailer up,I notice some play,it clicks a little when you accelerate. Are you supposed to defect it? (A lot of bother) or just ignore it…

I feel like you know the answer to this one. What do you reckon your gaffer will likely say if you phoned it in?

The jaws are probably worn on the fifth wheel. It needs checking over.

Trailer comes off on the motorway, someone’s getting killed/injured. Your call…

If I knew,I wouldnt be asking, anyway thanks for the reply

Yes, you’re supposed to defect it.

Sometimes referred to as “trailer slapping”

How is it a lot of bother to defect something? It’s not like you’re expected to fix it yourself, just fill out a defect form and give it to the office. You know when you get a unit with a headlight out, trailers with bulbs out or legs you can barely wind up or down because they’re bent etc etc etc that’s because of people with your attitude.

Ok,thanks for the replies

I’m not a C1 driver…

Anything that requires the trailer to be connected to the unit and doesn’t seem right, should be defected or at least let a mechanic have a look, I would hate for the trailer detach and kill someone!!!

Personally depends how bad it is as to whether I defect it start of shift or after. Before is a pita as it can take nearly an hour to get a headlamp bulb fitted.
If a 5th wheel was shagged it’d likely be vor at start of shift. If you’re unsure about anything before taking it out just defect it or ask.

Whilst i agree with your response one place i worked at the vmu was halfway round the yard from the drivers office you had to go to the vmu and get a fitter to agree there was a problem then walk to the office to get a defect sheet they would fill it out and then have to phone someone to get permission to have it fixed and a special code then it would have to be entered into the log with the special code and the shift manager would have to sign it all off then walk back to the vmu with the defect ticket. Used to wind me up though when i would get in and find a blown bulb or something equally silly all because someone couldn’t be bothered at the end of their shift all because they wanted to get home before the 9 hours paid was up

That’s exactly…

Why the previous driver didn’t defect it. Because you’re reporting it, you have to go through all the hoops you just described.

At a meeting with transport at WH Malcolm’s, transport was slagging off the drivers for not booking trucks off. They were met with the response of 'what’s the ■■■■■■■ point if you never fix ‘em?’.

i would not let that go. Years back i saw a truck that had the 5th totally replaced and it looked to be a most complicated job as it was tearing out low down
