Ex-Pat Driver CPC

I would imagine that this subject has been a topic of conversation previously. However, I would like to know how ex-pat drivers with grandfather rights handle the driver CPC situation in the U.K. In an ideal world, many of you may never wish to return home (understandably), others may decide that living/working overseas does not suit their personal circumstances and choose to return before driver CPC validity becomes an issue. At present I’m unsure if I’ll be able to complete the remainder of my 35 hours periodic training before flying back to Canada although I would like to. So, what have others done when faced with this situation?

PM Mickfly, sure he’ll be glad to tell all.Just don’t mention the “C” word

As far as I am aware, we would have no grandfather rights at all, and we would be unable to work if we came back there without it. But if I went back, there is no way you would get me driving truck there again anyway.

Did’nt you get your class 1 on grandfather rights Bob  :grimacing:

I hope your Lass is OK BTW Chap best of luck & all that.

Am I not a little younger than you? :grimacing: :grimacing:

Thanks mate. She was doing better yesterday. She seems to have woken up to the fact that her body needs to be looked after. Now if she would only decide that I, as her mechanic, should be allowed to service it for her…

I’m only 25 :open_mouth: Well I think I am.

You best leave the servicing & keep your tools to yourself for a bit, let her get better before you set about your 6 weeklys :exclamation:

Hey, if she is well enough to cook then she is well enough to…

Hang on, she doesn’t cook…

Got a longer service schedule than that, mate. That poxy long life oil!! See what happens when servicing isn’t regular, bits break and fall off!! :grimacing: :grimacing:

I spoke to DVLA before leaving UK and was told if I allow my licence to expire by either not having my medical or not taking CPC then my licence would be no longer valid and I would need to retake my tests. :unamused:

Strange.I was told that all I had to do if I returned would be to pass the medical,if mine had expired, and would still retain my category entitlements,Maybe the ejits changed the rules since 05,who cares ? NOT ME

It’s academic to me, if I ever go back I won’t have any need for my class one, I wouldn’t last 5mins driving over there again, I tried it for a couple of weeks during my extended holiday last year, hated every minute of it

I’m 56 now and my licence expired when I was 45 because I didn’t take the medical then. 3 years ago, I contacted the DVLA to see if my licence could be reinstated. It could! All I had to do was take a medical and the DVLA sent me an HGV licence again. This of course predates the DCPC so that could change things, but I expect that it will be possible to take the DCPC in 1 go like a new driver would have to and everything else will still be the same.

Oh well, I suppose I’ll just have to ■■■■ it up and get as many modules in as possible although it’s an expense I could do without right now. At least I don’t need to take the medical for another 17 years.

Why not just do the driver CPC if and when you return, It does not affect your licence category entitlement just your permission to drive

You may do the CPC now and not need it until 2019 at which time you will have to start again :unamused:

You would not lose your licence due to CPC you would still hold a class 1, The CPC is a licence to carry goods think of it as an O-licence for people without it you can still drive a truck but you cant carry goods for others but if you say were a scaffolder you dont need it as you are only have on the truck the goods you need to do your job.

At the time you did what was reqired by law to get your licence so it can’t be taken away but as always they will keep adding limits to us, So in short you may have to take a medical to get it back the the CPC to get work but you can’t be made to do a retest
