Euro 6 engines

My Euro 6 daf xf will go two weeks between fills on the adblue, but the Euro 5 MAN’S that we have got will barely do a full week without needing topped up.

I didn’t think Euro 5 MANs used AdBlue. All the ones I’ve driven are EGR only.

Euro 5 just use EGR and they are all having their big end and main bearing shells changed (done 5 of the bloody things so far)
What a crap engine.Bloody things bend con rods and smash liners for fun.

Too much soot in the oil turning it to grinding paste or fuel dilution stripping the bearings?

Did one yesterday, full set mains ,big ends, stretch bolts and thrust shims.Vehicle had done less than 250,000 km.
Old bearings were showing no signs of wear or scoring.
Apparently the oil sample had shown an “anomally”.

Must be costing the German buggers a bloody fortune.
Mind you just had one in that blew the motor so it had to have a new donkey.
38,000 quid plus labour. Ouch!.

Blimey my idea of converting the old N14 to run on LPG looks better all the time.

Problem with Euro 6 engines is that they use two crap systems, addblue tagged on to the back of EGR.
A bloody disaster.
EGR puts exhaust gas back into the engine. Now thats bad enough but the real problem is that it runs through some bloody heat exchanger that is water cooled. One thing you do not want is water anywhere near an inlet manifold. All it takes is a leak in the exchanger and you got a few bent con rods. The exhaust gas is highly acidic, eats through the exchanger matrix and bang the motors a write off.
Then you got add blue. This bloody crap crystalises as you look at it.Low air pressure when you turn off the motor,no purge air and the whole system clogs up solid.Thousand quid bill to clear or replace the diffuser unit. Then you got the stupid bloody paticulate filter that has to be used because of the cold exhaust gas being pumped into the engine from the stupid bloody EGR heat exchanger. As the exhaust gas has a low exit temperature soot forms on the filter blocking the matrix and putting up a differential pressure fault on the dash.If regeneration fails then another few grand for a silencer.
Also you got the 2 thermal probes and the NOx “sensor” to fail as well.

This crap has nothing to do with lower “emissions” its about making a lot of money.
A total bloody con.

If you ever think of running for Parliament, you would get my vote.
Well said that man.

If there’s no wear on the bearings why are they insisting they swap em? Are they losing oil pressure?

Bit of a result for you though, engine rebuilds are far more enjoyable than changing headlight bulbs lol

mercman the older I get the more I realise that nothing makes sense anymore.
I hear ■■■■■■■■■ telling me that they know better.
Some ■■■■ in a suit has to justify his job

Now in a world where people like me and thee had a say now “we know bugger all”
We now live in a world where common sense and experience count for nothing.
We are dinosaurs.

You’re not wrong, I’m going to need a neck replacement soon as I seem to spend a lot of my day shaking my head in dismay.

These scania and Iveco engines that don’t use egr is this the best option nowadays

Muckaway:
Can Euro 6 engines be remapped to switch off the adblue? I know operators who’ve done it to Euro 5s (particularly Daf owners) and it’s made their trucks much more reliable.

There are boxes that can be fitted to take off the adblue on euro 6 engines

My euro 5 Tgx is adblue only ,no egr on it

Euro 5 440 TGX’s are mainly EGR only but there are the odd few ad blue only ones about. 480hp and above are all ad blue. I’d far sooner be having to change blocked ad blue nozzles and filters than doing bottom ends that’s for sure!!

Evil8Beezle:
Why is Ad-blue so ■■■■ expensive? I think it’s about 85p a litre at the pump last time I looked.
I can’t believe it’s as expensive as fuel to produce/refine, so either the tax is astronomical or someone is making a killing!

It’s Urea in purified water, so there’s the health hazard (urea being Uric acid with another nitrogen (correct me, it’s been years since my degree)), but other than that I think they’re just making a killing :unamused:

Mines a 540 and the next adblue fault i get its getting turned off altogether !

Talking of Euro 5 MANs…
I had an 11 plate 35-400 which was EGR only, but Smiths have 35-400s of the same age that use adblue. Why is this? Why spec adblue when not required?
Similarly, I drove a MAN TGM 26-320 which needed adblue (12 plate) but we’ve just bought a 26-290 (61) without adblue.

Non of ours are adblue, the last new wagon was a 13 plate scania r480, no adblue.

Jesus, i fiiled up in alencon the other week and it was €0.39 per litre.

I had to buy some in southwaite on the M6 and it was 89p a litre on the pump :open_mouth:

Adblue is nothing more than a rip off. Euro 5 engines that were EGR only should’ve been the benchmark to reach and then that’s it. Everyone should just chip or remap and switch the stupid system off.

the scania can, but it has its own ecu and is around £1000 give or take
