When I used to run to Fords Tractor plant in the early 70’s there was a company in and out of there all the time called Readers, now I’m sure they were essex based, but it was a long time ago, anyone remember them, light blue i think maybe leyland buffalos.
hi, in the late 70’s i worked for a firm called cammellwagon for a couple of intresting months. did a lot of CP ships work with an old A series ERF,we parked up in a little yard behind some houses on the a 13 opposite Fords at Dagenham.the strange thing was i never had to fill up with diesel as it was always full the next day but every night there was always a Readers unit or two parked up in our yard.the last day i worked there i was doing my paper work when we was raided by the police and customs and excise, everyone was arrested except the boss an irishman called kieran who had disapeared.after an hour or so of questioning the boss came back with his tail between his legs and told the cops that none of the drivers had anything to do with the scam(which we didnt) and we all went home.i never went back there but it seems that most of Readers drivers where on the derv fiddle.i think Readers were something to do with May & Bakers chemicals.
cheers steve.
Later to be found in Chequers Lane,Dagenham opposite that little cafe by the railway crossing.
Was weekended in Piraeus once with a couple of Cammel Wagon driver’s,Tony,a real nice guy,and a Dutchman who was permanently ■■■■■■■
Tony told us that it was the Dutchman’s first trip and he’d been swigging anything he could get his hands on ever since they left Calais. They’d come over the Blanc with the Dutchman literally inches from Tony’s back bumper.
The Dutchman almost got us all locked up in Pireaus,he walked out of a supermarket with a bottle of whisky poking out of his jacket. Then went staggering back in with it bold as brass and asked the ■■■■■■■ the checkout for a bag to put it in.
Tony said he’d spoken with Kieran and it would be the first and last trip with them.
Used to see Kieran quite a bit as Goodways were renting an office and some parking spaces in the same yard.
Hi all, just joined the site, i live in Ireland but lived and worked in Harwich for meny yrs, i worked for Alan Cook haulage who shared a yard with Mathew Cornish transport next door too Harwich express, i also worked for Jim Gossbell, does any one remember these two company,s and do you have any photo’s especially OF a 141 i drove reg no XHK 589X…
Hullo All,
Cammel Wagon eh ? Does anybody remember Donkey Danny on there ? A really smashing bloke, always happy and smiling, except one day when he arrived in Piraeus, St Nicks’ Square he was a bit peed off. Aparently at somewhere up near Lamia he’d run into a Donkey and killed it, from then on he was Donkey Danny.
Cheers, Archie.
Does anyone remember the general haulage Company called D.C.JEAKINGS of Noble House, Wrexham Road Laindon Essex. I recall being told that he also had a depot in Bolton although this had closed by the time I joined The haulage side of the Company was finished in the late 80’s but the car rental and removals side of the buisness are still going, the former still in the same building. The Vehicles were blue with white sign writting, when I first joined the company as a fitter they were running Sedd Atki’s 400’s & a couple of Daf 2100’s & Merc V6’s, & 2 ERF’s fitted with the Rolls Eagle, he had 2 rigid seddon 200 fitted with the International Harvester engines, we had an old Borderer as a breakdown truck & used to do AA/BRS heavy recovery. The fleet changed to Merc 1625 V8’s & 2 Iveco 190.26. Jeakings had contracts with Thorn Lighting @ Romford, Nacanco’s Ripple Road Barking & Thermos @ Brentwood. He ended up with too many trailers for the yard at Laindon so we used to park them on a site at Warley just off the A127 there was a Volvo dealer on the same site i cannot remember its name.
I remember them, done a small for a firm i worked for in the early 90’s. They done the job with 77 D-Series Ford with a very leaky Hiab! Hav’nt seen any of the machinery motors for a few years now though.

Hi mickyb,
we had a new settee delivered not long ago (oct?) and it was a Jeakins removal motor that brought it. Looks like they do a bit for Harveys furniture. I don’t know if they’re still out of the same address though.

Yes micky i remember them well,i used to run out of bolton for them. The firm i worked for was fred snaylam.s and we did most of his haulage side from laindon to berwick and most points in between for a period of about 18months.The work was good[all van traffic]but our boss had to keep going to laindon to get the money off him.In the end he,d had enough and packed the job in.Snaylams shut the gates in 1983 a sad day for us all it was a good firm to work for.
regards dave.

Hi all, just joined this forum as a result of searching on Harwich Haulage and coming across this thread.
My dad drove for Harwich Haulage late 70s / early 80s, and did the regular German run - out on Sunday night boat, back on Wednesday day boat, and then up to Sheffield Thursday and Friday. He had 3 Scanias in that time - 111 - SNO 612R (in HH red), 111 - DNO357T & 141 JEV526V (last two in Woodcock Freight blue). If anybody has any pictures of these, or any other HH trucks, woudl love to see them.
Hi scaniason.i just looked at the post fronm you and it set me thinking.wasn’t harwich haulage the company from keelers tye with peter betts and his brother.i used to work out of harwich in the early 70s before i moved to holland.after i moved to holland peter betts stayed at my house a couple of times when he came over.a mate of mine called tony saunders worked for peter betts for a while.i dont know what happened to all the people as i now live in lappland.but it would be nice to know. mike
