I drove class 1 for years then got in the mechanics side of things and now have my own mobile mechanics business sometimes work is a bit slow so I am looking in to using my van as a ■■■■■■ vehicle as its 90% set up with all the lights etc… Does any one no any more about doing this kind of work or do company’s have there own vans to do this any info will be great
Its a very small world, most Ab Load escorts get their business by word of mouth and reputation. the best well known and busiest have many years experience in heavy haulage and piloting both in UK and in Europe. If you have no experience of heavy haulage , no idea of trailer swings, no idea of how to do a route survey or how to remote steer its very unlikely you would get much work at all.
Ab Load escorting is a lot more than sitting behind a truck with your beacons flashing.

Sorry, you didn’t make it clear you had AB Load experience, having done AB loads you will know the names in the industry and they will know of you, As I said above “most Ab Load escorts get their business by word of mouth and reputation.” the easiest way to get contacts for work is to chat to those you know. It is not an easy area to start in if you don’t have the contacts or they don’t know your experience. You could try at the “lighter end” as the static caravan transports etc tend to have a higher volume of work, and not require as much input from the ■■■■■■ as the heavier, longer stuff.
You might find some useful info here: gov.uk/esdal-abnormal-load-notification
I was trying to find the regulations for an ■■■■■■ van, especially the lights and markings but can’t seem to find it.
Thanks that’s really good info I will now have to find out the rates for this kind of work so I can see if it will be worth it ■■ Any one no any rates at all old or new ■■?
As ricki said experience is king you mentioned you was a driver who was that for as to be fair they are very few good escorts. one lad use is £300 day rate and don’t just see this like rest of them the insurance etc is a killer. A good ■■■■■■ makes job so much Easyer for instance I recently fetched some 36m loads out of Liverpool and the normal pilot van was on holiday so got a stand in . He new it all come very close to getting himself in a bit of trouble and getting squashed, got enough. Agro watching other parts on road never mind dodging ■■■■■■ vans and telling them what I want they should be there before I need to ask. Sorry May sound harsh but realistically very dangerous for a ■■■■■■ van
Hi all happy new year to every one I am hoping to get time to look in to this more next week does anyone no of any good insurance company’s to try for quotes
