ERF "SABRINA"

I totaly agree with you Dennis, They never really caught on anyway did they, Regards Larry.

Just for the record Sabrina was a 50’s model turned actress named Norma Ann Sykes, her figure and ample bosum remembered more than for her acting ability. More a British Monroe or Mansfield and often wore tight sweaters which enhanced her figure. If you recall the Alister Sim St Trinians film, she was the one sitting in bed in her nightie reading a book while chaos went on all around (funny how I remember that!). Its been said that the Sabrina name was given to a Foden model too but I’m not sure that this has been a case of mistaken identity, the make in question didn’t really have any bumps or curves to warrant the nickname. ERF didn’t do a bad job on the design but did it sell in the quantities it was intended for which seemed mainly the Brewery trade. Franky.

The ERF even gets a mention on Sabrina’s Wiki page:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina_(actress

Foden Sabrina .

Sepo:
when growimg up this model was always remarked to as the Sabrina cab… ERF also used the name on one of there rigid models with a bonnet on.

The above quote is from the following thread,Foden Thoughts,from Sepo’s post,Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:12 pm,it’s the first post on page 19:-

And in the third post down on the same page,he confirms yet again that Foden S24,S30,S34,S36 and S39 cabs were nicknamed Sabrina. And in my posts on the same page,No.s 17 and 19,I fully explain the facts why Sabrina is a legitimate nickname for the Foden S24,S30,S34,S36 and S39 cabs.
As it’s been pointed out several times on the internet by several enthusiasts, including me,although the styling of the Foden Sabrina cab was not as bulbous as the ERF SF Sabrina, the front end of the Foden Sabrina cab was curved across the front of the cab and projected out from the windscreen - hence the Sabrina nickname! :exclamation:
The Foden Sabrina name started off in the road haulage industry in the 1960s-1970s and spread on to the fairgrounds, because many travelling showmen operated Foden S24,S30,S34,S36 and S39 Sabrina-cabbed lorries and many fairground people followed road transport people by naming these Foden’s Sabrina’s
The Foden Sabrina name is more universal on the fairgrounds (because of the close fraternity of fairground people) than in the road transport industry,it is almost certainly a local name used in certain parts of the United Kingdom. So it is not as well known as the Foden S21 Spaceship and Sputnik names,BUT,it’s already been pointed out many times on the internet, the internet is breaking down the information barriers, thus the Foden Sabrina nickname is now becoming well known

they were popular with tipper fleetsken Thomas restored sabrina

That Thomas Sabrina is called Maxine!!!

Hiya…now for some useless info…the cab is a jennings… 2KV/14… if i remember rightley.
i remember the templets hanging on the wall but never needed to use them. but did need the 2kv
on some occasions…
i was talking to the chap who owns the Thomas lorry (David i think) 2 years ago i said i never sat in a
Sabrina although worked at Jennings, i was given the keys…David said he was going to restore the lorry.
Wow i thought restore it. if he looked at mine he,d see a lorry that needed restoring.

ERF also made a desert model of the Sabrina (true) it stood on 1400x20 sand tyres and was maybe15%
larger cab than the one’s in the photo.i only saw one…Why did i never have a camera with me.
John

this one john same chassis & cab as parkgate ballast tractor

Not a sabrina but still leonard green.

Hiya…i notice a couple of you say the sebrina wasn’t really good for ERF. i don’t know how many was made
i would think possibly close to 40 maybe more.at this time ERF was only building around 35 lorries a week
if they was lucky.i seem think Wilsons had about 15 (maybe they requested the cab)so building that many lorrie’s
was worth while. when i started Jenning’s in 66 they was makeing 25 LV cabs a day for ERF. some KV cabs was been
for repair jobs.some accident panels made plus some kv cabs exported.small numbers compaired to ford or BMC (remember them).its good to see a couple have lasted for us to see.
Thanks for the photo Revman.

Well where I live in Norhumberland this cab was allways refered to as The Cottage Loaf Cab, The S24 Tilt & the S36 Being the same shape appart from the front grill being fixed on the S24, Regards Larry.

Hi, All
Many thanks for the replies and info. Some great photo’s too. They were more popular then I realized.
BUT-- did the breweries ask ERF for a truck of which the Sabrina was the out come or, did ERF design it and then chase for a market for it.
I did wonder ,Dennis , if it was an attempt to keep all pots of a 8LXB under cover, but I might be wrong on that!!
I must admit that it had some graceful lines, and like a lot of other trucks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Having said that I prefer the looks of the original “Sabrina” !

Cheers Bassman

No Fodens were called Sabrina only ERFs

I agree with you I ran some Fodens & never ever heard them called Sabrina, Regards Larry.

Perhaps they look the same viewing from France

Or perhaps they should go to Specsavers Eh, A Foden is a Foden & an ERF is an ERF no matter which way anyone looks at them, Regards Larry.

I can’t see why ‘all’ the cab types above would gain the nickname when they didn’t posess any Sabrina like attributes as the ERF cab did and if so many Foden cabs had the name why was it not more widely known, also the cabs quoted above were Sixties models, a decade after the famed Sabrina had gone from the publics thoughts. I still think the passage of time and memory have become confused over this. I’ve never read any accounts of the Foden being named as such. Franky.

The “Sabrina” ERF disappeared long before the 8LXB came along “Bassman” and if they had fitted the 8LXB into one, half the engine would be under a bonnet inside the cab !! Cheers Dennis.
