ERF 'European' (1975)

As a matter of fact quite “dated” but herewith the advertisement in a local magazine of december 2004
when the ex-Eyckmans ERF (NGC) was offered. You all read and understand Dutch, I hope.
Réné Postma of Interwheels posted this advertisement then and did quite some business with rare trucks.

Interesting find A-J, and all part of the NGC history. Thank goodness it was fully restored in the end as KCH 95N!

My Dutch is very shaky, but a loose translation of this historical advert would be:

FOR SALE
ERF 7MW 6x4 tractive unit 1974, with 335 hp ■■■■■■■ engine and Fuller 'box. Well-preserved, a runner; just spray, re-build and drive! Belgian documentation. Would consider (in exchange) an ERF CP with a 290 hp ■■■■■■■ and Fuller.

For the attention of anyone wishing to contribute more on South African ERFs, I have started a new thread with that title. Cheers! Robert

I’ve managed to find out when the ERF NGC record for hill-climbing in TRUCK magazine’s Euro Tests was broken. I am posting one of their Euro Tests for July 1978 on the LHD SA400 thread and I came across this reference to the fact that after testing 22 vehicles over the years, the Volvo F12 had (only just!!) beaten the ERF in the hills. Here is the clipping… Robert

You may remember that some time ago I appealed for information about a photo that appears to be a Comart ERF NGC on the Comart thread. There may still be an NGC, of course, and the picture certainly shows it in their colours. But meanwhile, Ant (Willie Roadstar) has picked up a Facebook entry by an Italian called Alberto Milano, who posted a magnificent picture (bottom picture below, taken in Aosta, Italy) of a LHD 5MW in full Comart livery. I have re-posted it on the LHD 5MW thread. Can’t read the number plate, unfortunately. I rather like John3300’s line of thought on the Comart thread, that if the owner of the 5MW was pleased with his unit, he may have been encouraged to upgrade to a 7MW (NGC) - now that’s positive thinking! Robert

I don’t know if these have been posted before and haven’t got time to check, I also have toothache so I’m feeling very grumpy

Anyway, here they are, they came from Facebook and I believe Leo Mes was the snapper, so thanks to him.

In all fairness as I was not raised with excel…but since attending these threads around a superb company,
I now ‘counted’ around 150 Europeans, in case we define them as LHD and with operational-experience in EU!

I then counted the 5MW, 7MW and B in and have no clue about all the rest leaving the country of Dad’s army

Keep up the good work here and I look forward to Santa Claus bringing the ERF NGC-book 4 month’s earlier!

Ho-ho; insha’allah! I notice today that Amazon and Old Pond now have the book advertised as coming out in April. Robert

Found some more on that Facebook page, apologies if blogging them offends anybody.

Well done Newmercman, keep 'em coming. Most of these have long been posted on here, but I’m not sure that the 3rd one down has. I have it on my own files and it was taken by Wobbe Reitsma when he interviewed the owner. Plenty has been written about this long-serving vehicle on this thread. But keep them coming mate, because that is exactly how we make sure that nothing slips through the net: better to repeat items than to lose them altogether! Cheers. Hope the old tooth is sorted out! Robert

I had a feeling that some had been posted before, but thought that it wouldn’t hurt… Unlike my tooth

It isn’t strictly a toothache as I had the tooth removed, that’s when the problem started. I developed a dry socket, basically this means excruciating pain, so much that regular analgesic cannot even dull the pain, as I’m out on a trip that means I can’t take anything strong enough to do any good, so my only option is to take it like a man and moan a lot

I have this picture in my collection and have posted it before. However, here is a very slightly wider view found on Flikr’s joyous Motor Panels website! The useful thing here is that Flikr gives some vital information as follows: the picture was taken by Les Simpson in a yard in Asher Lane, Ripley, Derbyshire in 1990. So it lasted that long! Robert

Flikr taken in Asher Lane Ripley Derbs by Les Simpson 1990.jpg

 I recently ran a thread on the fantasy fleet / ideal long-hauler based on the following requirements:

  1. 9-speed Fuller constant-mesh manual gearbox
  2. Sleeper cab (Middle-East spec)
  3. Left-hand-drive
  4. ■■■■■■■ 14-litre straight-six diesel engine
  5. 4x2 (preferably LWB)
  6. Forward control (COE)

I eventually argued that if we confine our requirements to ordinary 4x2 robust TIR-trucks, with photo-evidence to back up the claim, the only POSSIBLE UNITS are:

a) ERF MGC (5MW cab) — NTC335
b) ERF NGC (7MW cab) — NTC335
d) Seddon-Atkinson 400 — NTC335

I then argued that if you eliminate models with awkward, round-the-houses gearboxes you lose the Seddon-Atkinson; and if you eliminate models with cabs that don’t even tilt you lose the ERF 5MW.

That leaves - ta da!!! - the ERF NGC (cue music, lights, ecstatic crowds dancing till dawn, camel-racing on the beach, ■■■ under the stars, champagne for breakfast, almond-eyed houris, delirious angels dancing on the ceiling, socks that match, bliss at elevenses…). Sigh! Robert

Quite extraodinary! Now then, back to business. I notice that there are surprisingly few pics of NGCs pulling fridge trailers about: only Richard Read and Trans Arabia spring to mind. Here’s one taken I think in Jeddah. Robert

Hi

The photo shows a Trans Arabia 7MW pulling a Unieed fridge trailer plus a pre A series pulling a flat empty trailer. Photo taken from Trans Arabia office and accom block
Unispeed were a Unilever company based in Watford - The triailer had brought Walls Ice cream plus other frozen Walls products. Trans Arabias partner was Binzager Co who were the Saudi sales agent for all Unilever products.
The trailer would have been shipped from Felixstowe to Jeddah on the Seaspeed Dora

Trans Arabia s Director and GM 1976 to 1982

Hello Ken, welcome to the thread mate. You’ve posted some nice detail there. I hadn’t realised that Bin Zagr were Saudi’s Unilever agents as well as being S Jones’s partner in Jeddah (which we did know). There is a good post by ‘Saviem’ on here about Unilever / Unispeed; and much has been said about Trans Arabia via Jerry Cooke and Mick Jones. This is a very dense thread and it’s hard to remember at times what has been said and what hasn’t. See also the Left-hand-drive ERF B-series and C-series threads because there is more Trans Arabia stuff on those. And watch out for my new book Lorries of Arabia: ERF NGC coming out in April. Don’t worry about repeating any info: as I said to Newmercman a couple of posts back, it’s far better to repeat stuff than allow it to slip through the net forever! So keep it coming Ken - info, pictures, contacts…Cheers! Robert

On that note here are a couple more repeats (possibly)

Some more…

Some people are emailing pictures to me that are coming off a Dutch Facebook site, but all the pictures are from this thread. It’s not a problem but we need to avoid too much repetition by reposting them back on here again! Robert :unamused:

That livery would look good on an LB110. :smiling_imp:

Don’t know if this one has been posted…the ex-■■■■■■■ and Pountains before Jona bought it?
