ERF 'European' (1975)

Re. ^^^^ : another pic showing a 5MW-cabbed unit (probably the same one) pulling the Read frigo trailer that did Baghdad.

And the same trailer being pulled by a domestic early '70s LV-cabbed unit.

As far as I can work out, Richard Read ran at least 3 frigo trailers on Middle East (Nos. 20 and 109 plus an unwritten trailer).

The season’s greetings to all! May it be peaceful. No idea who made the image but it fits the bill nicely.

I think I may have discovered the artist’s name: Stephen Greening. Please correct me if I’m wrong!

Hi Ro, hope you’re keeping well. The 7mw is coupled to the fridge trailer behind the traction engine. Or maybe ploughing engine, hard to tell.
I will try to attach a still or two. Bet the driver of the A series was thinking (why can’t i take that one?)

Well done for capturing that image, thank you :sunglasses: . Hope you’re keeping well. I’m fighting fit (but if you ask my liver the same question post Boxing Day it might give a different answer  ). That 7MW and fridge did Baghdad trips too, I understand. I imagine the A-series driver will be glancing at the Eric Vick day-cabbed Seddon that used to go down there with them, and thanking his lucky stars  .

Take care mate.

Also interesting to see 3 B series in the yard. Still in factory grey, must of been the first of the B series.

The B-series units may have been for onward sale, as RR were area ERF dealers.

Nice interior

Oh yes! And more comfortable to drive than the later B-series, but the B-series was a better cab to sleep in

Good news! Just stumbled upon this fenland news item (see link below) showing pictures of a recent truck show in which several of John Roberts’s immaculately restored and turned out vintage ERFs were displayed in full working order. I notice a B-series, the 5MW, a V, a KV, an LV. I say this is good news because when he finally turns out the ex-Collin NGC unit, we’ll be able to go and pay homage to both the NGC and its restorer(s). Any truck runs or shows in the Peterboro’ area will be the most obvious. Do let us know if you get news of such an event. :sunglasses:

This ghastly new set-up has disenabled ERF-NGC-European to gain access to logging in or posting anything. However, I am now posting under Les_sylphides so let’s get on with the job:

NGC thread > Here are five pics of Johnboy Robert’s beautifully restored ERFs. It is most encouraging that he is now rallying them on the show circuit for us all to enjoy. It is inevitable, I think, that the NGC will also be restored in his own livery. Whilst I respect the view of purists who might prefer it to be preserved in Collin livery, I don’t actually have any problem with someone who goes to the trouble of restoring the very last original NGC to such a high degree of mechanical and operational authenticity, painting the ERF in what is, without doubt, the stunning livery of his own stable. It has now moved, in real life, on to John’s own fleet so why would it not be in his colours? John’s preserved collection of ERFs appears to be the only completely consistent real-life fantasy fleet of lorries that I am aware of. I don’t see any difference between a mid-70s ERF moving on to another fleet after five years before finishing its life on a fairground or circus; and the same ERF moving to an active fleet of preserved vehicles in that owner’s livery. Personally, I can’t wait for its debut on the circuit. Rowena

Here’s an entirely new picture of No.28 on the register: De Meulemeester’s NGC of Pittem in Belgium. It’s lost its registration plate in this picture so this may have been just before it was collected by John Simmons and taken to UK for cannibalisation. This unit, chassis number 27979, was operated by De Meulemeester of Pittem in Belgium. It became the doner vehicle for GEH 513N, which eventually acquired its NTC 335 engine, 13-speed gearbox, Jake-brake and rear suspension. ERF-NGC-European

Nice piccies. Any more there?

For any NGC fan interested in updating their bibliography, I’ve just acquired an ERF book I’d not seen before. It is: Ward, Rod (2020) ERF Album. Zeteo Publishing, Leeds, UK. It is No.160 in a whole series of low-price automotive books worth looking out for.

It’s only a slimline softback but it is crammed with information. The brief reference, with a photo of GEH 513N, to the NGC model tells us nothing new but at least it’s all accurate.

At the tail-end of the book is the fullest account I’ve yest read of ERF’s final financial stitch-up of MAN before MAN rightly dumped the ERF name for good.

EDIT to say pic isn’t in book: I simply included it because it appears to be a clearer pic of Peter Foden admiring what appears to be a pre-production NGC in '73.

Thanks for triple bump-up franglais

Watch this space for more, as Hans Witte who contributed much to this thread from Holland has recently been in touch.

Ro (ex-ERF-NGC-European)

I wish to be open, transparent and clean here chaps.

I’ve had three identities on TN over the years. When I was ERF-NGC-European, (my 2nd ID on TN) I also added what I called my ‘service ID’ posting very occasionally as Les Sylphides.

When the new TN2 opened this February, I tried to log on with my normal ERF user-name. However, the system by default sent the password change link to my old email address to which I no longer have access.

I tried to register afresh with a slightly different ERF user-name but the system wouldn’t let me on because my current email address was already taken by Les Sylphides. When I logged in using my current email address I was automatically logged in as Les_sylphides, leaving me no further option than to adopt my ‘service’ ID as my main one, (Admin were unable to change my user-name).

So please forgive me what may appear to be smoke-and-mirrors but really isn’t!

Now I’m stuck with Les_sylphides. Les Sylphides in real life is a ballet about sylphs choreographed originally by Michael Fokine and set to the music of Frederick Chopin. I originally chose it to launch my short-lived thread on trucks & ballet which - quelle surprise! - never really caught on.

On another tack, if you are still out there A-J from Holland; did you have any further luck with your NGC research into CBD archives in Brussels?

You won’t believe how much trouble I have been having trying to log on over the last three weeks.

Many years ago, I found that for some reason I was unable to log on to the Trucknet site using the name Mushroomman so after a couple of days, I decided to rejoin with the username opal finder. When I eventually checked to see who was online at the time I was surprised to see that both opal finder and Mushroomman were both logged on so I decided to revert back to Mushroomman.

When this new site started, I couldn’t log on so I sent Trucknet an e-mail and I received a reply stating that my username was opal finder. I had to send another e-mail today to be able to log on so can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong.

Obviously, I can’t ask if there is anybody else who can’t log in.
To be on the safe side I don’t think that I shall be logging off in case I can’t get back in again.

Les sylphides, I once did a three week trip to Italy, Venice and Rome with The Royal Ballet who were performing Romeo and Juliet, circa 1982/3. It was a brilliant three weeks if anybody want’s to hear about it.

Stands back and presses the ‘submit button’.
E.T.A. now where’s the ‘submit button’.

Nightmare innit! The submit button is called ‘reply’, as you’ve just discovered.

And good to have you back amongst us again MMM!

Interested to hear about your trip to Italy with the Royal Ballet. Incidentally I lived and worked in Rome many years ago and coincidentally I attended last night (with a bevvy of young ballerinas), a performance in Canterbury of the Sao Paulo dance company, who were brilliant.

Cheers!
