ERF 'European' (1975)

And also a very favourable one in T&D, again June issue. And another in the April issue of CV Driver mag. Robert

I’ve just noticed the ‘parked’ legs on the skelly in this Trans Arabia picture. Was this just a new trailer waiting to be ‘unwrapped’ or did it have a folding legs facility? Robert

Hi Robert
These are X S Joness fleet trailers 20’ skel and 12mertre striped tilt trailer fitted with twist locks and just repainted

The legs bots are undone and the leg turned upwards with 2 top bolts - bolted on one side .

In you No 2 book it mention equipment being sent overland to Trans Arabia - this never happened

S Jones ran an international operation out of Alridge into main Europe with tilt and tanker trailers - they only went to the Middle East once and that was to Doha with 3 trailers of computer equipment in 1975
They got there with no problems but one had an issue coming home - parts were air freighted but never arrived and in the end they stripped the trailers down and double topped as far as the Austrian border where they were stopped and a fitter was sent out to effect repairs. I always thought TA 104 the ERF MW5 wad one of them with Stan Bindley ad one of the drivers - he was one of the first drivers that came to Jeddah.
I maybe wrong on TA104 running to Doha but I am sure Mr Cooke will correct me if I am.

Cheers

Ken Broster

Thanks for that, Ken! That bit in the book refers to the same story as yours, that Cookie mentions. The only wrong detail is that I have the destination down as Jeddah, and you are correcting that to Doha. Thanks. And you’re quite right in thinking that I didn’t buy the key-fob thing!

Cheers, Robert

I also picked up a copy of REVS 134 (June 2011) and found this pic of HNV 59N’s cab, taken by Mick Jones in it:

Looks like the “black dog” in the background also Robert, new to Triumph Furniture I think, have got a photo of it when Jona had it and when Triumph ran her.

Well spotted, Pete! It is indeed ‘Black Dog’, ex-Triumph Furniture. It was Jona’s first unit when he set up. Robert

Couple of pics of it here Robert, it was also owned by W.H Williams of Spennymoor, have you any photos of it please Carl? Cheer’s Pete

I think you’re talking about a different lorry, Pete. Here’s ‘Black Dog’. Robert

That one is in Carl’s list of lorries owned by W H Williams also Robert, can’t find any info if it was owned by Triumph as well

Here is a photo I took of BPT 602W at W.H. Williams at Green Lane, Spennymoor, Co. Durham

Back to NGCs! Another Chris Till photograph to ponder (not in book 2). It shows Eric Vick’s KFH 249P and one of the Richard Read NGCs in appalling weather doing the Baghdad run. Robert

There’s a really good review of both the Lorries of Arabia book in the June issue of Classic Truck. Robert

And here’s another Chris Till photo (not in the books) to enjoy. Yes, the day-cabbed Seddon was on Middle-East work too. The Transcon belonged to Eric Vick but was still in its previous owner-driver’s livery (all explained in book 2!). Bon weekend. I’ll be ‘off air’ for a few days. Robert

Vintage Roadscene May '16. Robert

All in all good and nice news for you but how many pages has volume 2?
The review states 138 and 70 pages. Well 70 pages is rather small I guess?
